Mufflers, Fabspeed or AWE
#16
Like I have posted many times over, I have Fabspeed mufflers the same set since September 2006 well over 25,000 miles and 25+ track days. The Fabspeed hold up very well.
There are a lot of 997S car that track with me that have Tubi, AWE, Fabspeed and so forth. To my ears the Fabspeed sound the best at over 5000rpm....they really have that Cup car wail. At idel the Fabspeed are a little deeper sounding where as the AWE are stock like quiet.
So if you want a little extra sound go for the Fabspeed, if you want almost stock car quiet go for the AWE.

Finally and opinion I can use. That was what I was looking fore. I like that cup car sound….. and the reason for that I am sifting mufflers, is for the sound scud be better then stock. I think I will go for the Fabspeed then.
Thanks agian.

For Mufflers, it's Fabspeed. I had a set on my 996 and they were terrific. I've got a set on my 997S, and love them. Their sound is more dramatic than AWE.
Check out my video showing stock vs. modded:

However, it's AWE all the way for cats.
For headers, I'd do x51 from Suncoast.
EVOMS for the cold air kit.
Finally, chip it. GIAC, Softronic, or custom.
With that (and a plenum- no flames!) you're set. Major performance upgrade.

Thanks for your god replay, that also was I big help.
Is the Evo intake that god, and is it worth the money…..?
I like that Cup car / GT3 sound, but I don’t want the sound do be annoying inside the car…

I have the AWE mufflers with my setup, and I have heard the Fabspeed as well. I thought the Fabspeed were more aggressive at higher rpm than the AWE's. Still not enough for me...
Now my experience is with the AWE 200cpi metallic cats, with the AWE's on the car without the cats it was way to quiet for my taste. The Fabspeed setup I heard was with cats as well.

IMO, if some of you are looking for seriously wicked and aggressive sound without breaking the bank, you guys really should consider the "new player" in town- www.afterhoursautomotive.com > Porsche mufflers.
Keep in mind that they are not made like your typical high-dollar mufflers. They are simply designed to do a few things well, 1. seriously bad azz tuned sound at WOT, 2. combined performance benefits of both bypass pipes and mufflers, 3. save weight. Plus, you don't need to mess with changing your cats. It's not neccessary.
You will get more sound inside the cabin, but it's still plenty liveable for DD IMO. It might even make you not want to turn on your stereo anymore due to it's own "music".
In this same type of product vein you can also look at Jubily from Zero International or M&K, but IIRC they do not make anything for 997 yet.
On the name-brand side, I have heard that Cargraphic "loud" version mufflers sound pretty bad-azz above the other mufflers- but I have not heard them in person.
If you are primarily concerned with keeping the inside cabin noise level to stock, don't expect to get "cup car" sound outside the car. Not realistic.
If you want to keep quieter sound in the car, you must go with a quieter muffler.
PSE is very good in this respect although 0 performance gains.
Agency Power mufflers are also a very good choice. Well made, inexpensive and sound extremely good once burned in. Plus, you'll probably pick up a few HP.

I'm beginning to think that you own Afterhours automotive. j/k It is great that you have that much passion for it, I'm starting to look into them thanks to you.

Yep- I guess I should ask for some stock in the company eh? LOL
I am a big fan of the AH pipes for those wanting wicked sound, add HP/TQ without breaking the bank, and trim weight. I'm equally as "posty" about KWv3 coilovers and KN intakes in related threads. I suppose I have my "favs" .
The AH pipes are best suited for those who have tried different can-style mufflers and have not been happy with the sound level (looking for that cup car sound), and then have tried bypass pipes and got tired of the headache. The AH pipes are very unique in design and function. But you must be ok with living with a bit more noise inside the car. Nowhere near bypass pipe interior noise, but more than stock. Keep in mind that previous to AH, the only way you could get this design of sport pipe was from Jubily / Zero Int'l at a cost of $2500. Ouch.
Most of the time folks just look at the common name brand stuff, some of it (to me) seems a bit overpriced for what you get. Not that any of these products are bad, but there are some very good alternative solutions from lesser known vendors, and at lesser cost.
I also recommend the Agency mufflers for those wanting a slightly tamer experience and better exhaust sound / performance over stock, and again not break the bank.
How is Josh's car treating you?

I'm like you, I want the most bang for the buck when it comes to parts. I haven't heard you promote the K&N Instake that much do you think it's better than the EVOMS one? The price difference is about double I believe.
I'm really enjoying the car and Josh was a great guy to work with. I'll post pics when I'm done with the mods!

KN I think is a great bang for the buck. EVOMS is very nice as well but IMO there is 0 benefit over KN, so why pay double? If it were carbon fiber, then that would make a good justification for the extra cost.
You'll get varied opionions on one vs another. Some say the KN is not good because it sucks in hot engine air and hurts performance, so the EVOMS must be better. I have yet to see a shred of fact or evidence on this, it is all conjecture. I've used the KN on my 996 and now 997, if there had been a hint of issue or performance loss I wouldn't be using it.
Some pcar owners with the '99 MY 996 had issues with the MAF going south after install of the KN. Problem seems to be specific to that year and possibly manufacture of the MAF sensor.
Lastly, there is some assembly required for the KN. It is a bit of a PITA to assemble the intake body shell and the instructions suck. That's about it on the downside.
Great sound from the KN or EVOMS unit, can't go wrong with either one.

Dave- Call Brian and ask. Really nice guy and will take time to answer any Q's you have. I am supposed to have my set put on next week. Keep in mind these are all hand made and tested prior to shipping, and are made in batches of 10 or so (last I heard). So if you want one, place order now and expect to wait a week or two before it ships.

Nice info on KN vs. Evo…..
I pretty sure that I am going for the Fabspeed mufflers, I think the AfterH. Is too laud.
But have would you compare Fabspeed vs. Agency in sound

I have not personally used the Fabspeeds so cannot comment 1st-hand. I'd suggest calling Dan at VividRacing, I'm sure he has used both and can give a fair assessment.
I do know the Fabspeeds are a 996 muffler packaged with two pipe extenders to make them reach the cats on 997 cars. I think that is slightly cobby...JMHO
Here's a vid of the Agency mufflers on a 997S: http://www.vividracing.com/catalog/a...5-p-29510.html
