roof rack for bicycle ??

No, not a whole lot of wind noise, as long as you secure the straps that are part of the bike rack so they don't flap around. I bought a roof transport system for my 997, with two bike racks for $400 on ebay. Keep an eye out and you'll see the systems are available quite frequently.

I know it is sacrilege to put a rack on a beautiful 997, but I did it anyway, because I love cycling too. Now I can enjoy driving and cycling in one outing. I bought factory crossbars on ebay for around $460 (just checked and they still had some listed Byer's Imports). Suncoast told me a couple of weeks ago that Porsche had a recall on their bike attachments, so I went looking for another option. What I found was that Yakima recently released their first bike attachment for most factory crossbars called the "Forklift". I bought and installed two of them on Friday for $139/each. When I called Yakima they said they don't list the 997 because they never tested it on one. They fit and work perfectly and create minimal noise. I can dismount the whole setup from the car in 5-10 minutes now that I have done it, so I will probably not leave it on all of the time. It is probably the most solid setup I have ever owned.

I wonder if Thule (or someone else) makes a rack that would fit the factory mounts of a 911. You can lower resistance and noise with a wind deflector.
I use a Thule mounted into the factory points for my M3. Put a basket on and use it to carry track tires. Unbolt it at the track and take it off.

Not my car but this is where I got the idea.

sorry to drag up this old thread...
i take my m5 with bikes on the roof all the time...think a hot car with bikes on top is pretty cool looking...heck these are cars, might as well use them. if the porsche rails are anything like the bmw rails, they will not damage your roof at all..i'm lucky since thule made an e39 specific rack system that is pretty decent value. here's a (lousy) picture of my car with bikes on the roof.

I have one, selling it because I got a bigger car.
It was pretty easy to use and quick to put on and take off. I never used the wheel holder and just put the wheel on the back engine cover with the rear seats down.

one question is whether normal thule or yakima attachments will fit onto the oem porsche bars....if so there are better alternatives than porsche offers, at least for bike attachments. i have these great thule bike carriers that don't touch anything but the tires of my bike...no scratches on carbon frames, and the carrier will fit anything from a youth bike, road bike, to a full on downhill mtn bike. for those thinking of getting the rack, worth checking into for sure.
