Big O,
Would you share what you can about your shopping and buying experience? How did you find your car, did you go see it, and some pics? I'm shopping and would like to learn from those that have been there, done that. Thanks

I have loved P-cars since childhood (mid 60s), but sadly, never owned one. I recently test drove a Cayman and Cayman S, and loved them both. Wanting to make sure, I also drove a 997 C2, and WOW, how different could 2 cars be? Within 20' of letting the clutch out, something I can't define had me thinking "What a solid, smooth, and wonderful car!" I changed my focus completely to "Gotta have a C2." Since then, I've read many posts on caymanclub.net site, and enthusiasm for the Cayman (obsession?) and general dismissal of all non-GT3 911s is working on my head.
What I don't want to do is buy a P-car and decide 2 months later that I got the wrong car. I would buy pre-owned either way. Please weigh in and give your opinion on 997 or Cayman S. I also feel the need to drive a 993 to give that car a shot.

Also, I felt intimidated by Z cars, hot Subaru's and other rice burners in the CS and much more confident in the C4S. The new M3 would outrun the current CS...I know not on the track. Just my .02...of course that lesson cost me dearly!!!

Hey A7E
A7E,
I've bought various purchases over the net for awhile. Beleive it or not found a lead from E-Bay (of course). Got a fair market price for a clean well serviced vehicle. No huge price drops or much haggling, just went with a reputable company. Only had less than 10 pictures to go on, and didn't really spend a lot of time comparing features or benefits. The more stuff you get (options) higher the pricing. Expect to pay $10k more for the S model. I'm planning to mod the car (ECU, exhaust, cats, headers) so the horses will be increased later. Half the fun is modding it yourself. Found a clean low mileage black/black vehicle with most of a service history and sent the money. Not a whole lot to think about, didn't want to make it complicated. Carfax was good, and even though the paint looked fine in the pictures, I'll be detailing the car myself. Swirls and imperfections will go away after polishing. For a few thousand would have saved buying a higher mileage car here wasn't worth it. The local dealerships were uncomfortably high in pricing for newer and couldn't handle the "let me go ask the sales manager" stuff LOL. Southern California is a drivers town, and people spend way too much time in their cars. Finding lower mileage cars is tougher at discounted pricing. Shipping a vehicle is no big deal, plus you save state sales tax. Don't forget about DMV registration and fees. Typically, internet based pricing is lower than retail. If you don't care what the cost is, go to the dealer and pick out your car. If you enjoy the hunt while saving money, E-Bay is a good place to start. Feel free to pm me with any questions.
*Edit*
Hopefully if the car arrives tomorrow, will snap some pics and post them

Silentrun and Big O,
I really appreciate your replies. Your advice is invaluable to me. Silentrun, is your member name a Navy reference also? It makes me think Run Silent, Run Deep.
Anyway, your CS is truly stunning. I think about how much pride you must have had in that car, and then to have the C4S win you over so completely is impressive. My R32 is a hoot to drive, and I never worried about how fast other cars were, but the test drives in the C and CS realigned the planets for me. And then the C2. I like your comment about it being a more mature feeling car.
Big O, your attitude in that purchase is really commendable. I wonder how much of the $10K spread between the C2 and C2S will remain in future years... Then I think about buying a car to enjoy for many, many years, without worry about upgrading to a better ride, which for me means that it has to be a C2S. But then, what about 997.2?
One of the lessons you guys give, though, is you made a decision and pulled the trigger. I'll work on that. I know that it has to be a manual 911. That's a good start.
Thanks for your help.
