Holy windshield, need advice!!
I was getting in one last drive in before I put my car away for winter, 5 minutes from home and I hear WHACK!! I know I didn't anything, then I look to the right side and my windhield had a crack the size of golf ball. Was very windy out..must have been a tree branch. Funny, I wasn't even upset once I saw that the car was still flawless..glad it wasn't a deer. I was lucky I didn't have the top down and that noone was hurt..
So, my question to you guys are:
1) How much is this going to cost me?
2)Should I have it done at the dealership?
Thanks...and be careful out there.

Your insurance comprehensive should take care of that. I would have that replaced at the dealer using OEM (or better glass) and I would want it done by someone who has done the same type of windshield/car many times and does a perfect job.

I have had this happen but not with my current car .
Insurance comprehension covers it as someone else said . I don't even think I had to pay a deductible and no penalties . I did request that the dealership fix it and the insurance company was fine with it .
The car will smell like glue for awhile but that odor goes away . Good luck.

As others have said, insurance covers it and no deductible but thats only if you have full glass coverage. In addition, you do not need to have it done at the dealer, any reputable glass place should have no trouble with it and in fact be better off than dealer since they deal with glass every day

This is the key point. Most of the time the glass company will fit some other brand.....make sure you get OEM.

Two MORE things you MUST keep in mind:
1. The metal clips on the A-pillar trim (5 per side: 3 small + 2 large clips) bend VERY easily. If you go with a non-dealer to install it, make sure they know this and have extra clips on hand.
Trust me...I wasted a good three weeks on this petty issue when I replace my windshield over the summer.
2. The rubber spacers that come mounted on the inside bottom of the windshield should NOT be removed. It's actually part of the windshield that makes it flush with the exterior windshield cowl trim (i.e. trim around wipers). Make sure that the installers do NOT mistake this for packaging material and thus removing it prior to installation.
I'd say go with the dealer since they will be held liable for any defects. Just saving you the headaches that I went through recently...

I am having my windshield replaced tomorrow. In my case, Geico doesn't consider glass any different than a front bumper, so I have to pay my comprehensive deductible. In some states, such as FL, glass is free or $50 deductible.
Additionally, I was told that Porsche does not make their own glass. All Porsche does is either put a Porsche sticker, or etch the logo into it- and they don't do it on all of them. My dealer told me they outsource windshield repair.
So, a 3rd party is coming to my house tomorrow, and will do the work for my $500 deductible. I will make sure they guarantee their work, as I fear I'll get creaking, whistling, etc.
Anything else I should consider?

Actually just had my windshield replaced yesterday. My insurance company had a glass company send someone out to my house and replace the windshield with Porsche OEM parts. I compared the stamp on the new glass to the factory installed glass and it was exactly the same.
The guy was very meticulous and did a fantastic job. In talking to him it doesn't sound like there are actually any non-OEM replacement windshields for the 997.2. He also mentioned that the glass was very soft meaning it should be more resistant to cracking.
All the antenna connections and the rain sensor work perfectly, so make sure they properly connect everything back up. I let it sit for 24 hours before I drove it. Then I drove it right down to the dealership to get my winter wheels on (snow in the forecast here next week in IL).
