Adaptive cornering lights worth it?
#2
There is a good write-up in Porsche's tech book with some illustrations of beam pattern and intensity that help present the benefit. I will see if I can scan and post that tomorrow.
Money well invested without a doubt
And other that additional cost, there is no negative to getting them.
PS- My cars are daily drivers, so my decision making process takes that into account. If you know you only drive on sunny weekends and/or your car is a garage queen, then save your $.

For those referring to other cars. Not all systems are the same. BMW has a mirror turning behind the light if I am not mistaken. And Doesn't mercedes have an extra light that goes on when cornering?
I understand the benefits but I would like to know how good the system works on the C2 FL in particular.
Those new light units from the Mercedes E class with integrated camera are quite impressive too! (but i m not gonna get that car )

I speced them on my 2009 Targa 4 that I've been driving for about 2 weeks now. In my mind, money very well spent. The most dramatic effect I can observe - ie safely observe - is when driving down the curvy roads in the neighborhood up here in Sammamish, Washington at night in total darkness. Going 20mph around sharp bends, I can clearly see the headlights turn, but more dramatic to indicate they are aiming differently is a the exit out of the corner as the car is straight in the road, and I can see the headlight aim coming back to straight from the angle that it was aimed at during the sharp turn. They will help tremendously in dark 2 lane windy and hilly roads with trees and mountains around.. ie no light but what I make. I've yet to find an option I spec'd that I don't find useful yet. ( I did not get the Bose system, the stock audio is perfect for the amount of road noise in the car)

They turn quickly enough. They react to the steering input. Driving 20mph around a sharp bend in a neighborhood, where I can see the beam shapes on the trees, bushes and dark houses is slow enough to observe the effect. Had I been moving quicker, that is, steering quicker, the adjustment would have been faster than I could likely see.
To be clear, the headlights don't totally shift away from pointing forward, their center of aim is just adjusted to the right or left. So, with the wide beam spread, as you exit a corner, you would get a small amount of time where there is less coverage out past the outside edge of the curve, and more on the inside edge of the curve. But the lost coverage is only slight and way off to the side. The benefit of illuminating more in the area I'm likely going is where the value is.
That said, if you were driving a chicane at high speed in total darkness on a track, where you transition through sharp left then right then left steering again, for example, it may be that the headlights are pointing slightly in the wrong direction as you enter the area of a direction change, but as that sort of arrangement isn't found on normal roadways, and I'm not worried about deer standing 10 yards off the side of the racetrack chicane in the middle of the night.. its a non issue.
Anyone else care to comment?

Well, I haven't driven enough to notice it on my targa yet but I have noticed a similar feature on the Cayenne. I think its neat but overall but I wouldn't say necessary. I'm driving in the city mainly and rarely do I go on long sweeping twisty roads with minimal lighting.
