Rear snow tires @ 245/45R18?

I'm trying to get a set of 18" snows from TireRack for the 997 C4S.

Of course, a narrower tire is better in the snow. When I called, TireRack, they TireRack wouldn't recommend anything narrower than 265 for the rears, saying that running a 245/45R18 in the rear would be nuts because of all the power that the car puts down.

Anyway, I can get Michelin 245/45R18 PA3 tires for the rear from TireRack or Pirelli Winter 240 265/40R18. Anyone here have an opinion on the 265/245 difference in size tire? Will I just be breaking lose all over the place with the 245? What is that, 2cm? I can't imagine that much even matters.

Heck, the Michelin www site actually recomments a 235/40R18

Thanks...

Le Chef is infamous around these parts
Porsche have tested various wheel and tire size combinations and arrived at what they consider optimal. TireRack are adding to that experience. I wouldn't go narrower as I can easily get wheel spin on 265's before PSM cuts in, and I'm not trying...

Thanks!
I ended up going with the 265 Pirelli Sottozero IIs for the rear from TireRack.

Hopefully you got the same tires front and rear, otherwise you've just got yourself a potential handful...

Umm... nope Got 235/40R-18 up front and 265/40R-18 in back.
How could I even have the same size? OEM is 235 and 305. I don't imagine that the 265s could fit up front without rubbing, could they? And everyone has confirmed and reconfirmed that no way can I run 235s in back.

It wasn't clear and mixing tires like mixing drinks is not a good idea.

The 265 recommendation is based as much on rim width as power delivery. In the snow, the more narrow, the better - within reason. 245's are just too narrow for the rims. They are not a good fit.

Give me a call next time. I'll be glad to set you up.

And now it will not snow here this winter (Wash. DC). Already, since I've ordered the tires, the snow called for on Thursday is now going to be just another cloudy day.
