How to get rid of wheel hop??
I love this car...but this wheel hop has got to go. What will it take new dog bones, quaife LSD..what? Man I stabbed the throttle and just with the lightest incipient slide the rear was hopping. I know alot of this is also my Pirelli's are 2 years old with 11k miles and they are about to give up the ghost. However the fact the way this axle handles wheel spin is just not right. Any input guys appreciated.

I have never had wheel hop in the 997S and owned two of them . Not even slight glitch in the AWD Turbo either. The M3 -- now that car has some hop.
So the questions .
Have you considered PS2' Michelins ? I have never had Pirellis .

+1. I acknowledge that, though less than it's predecessors, the 997 series has some behavioral issues with the suspension. Nose bob, yawing when hard cornering, rear-end confusion when slaloming. But wheel hop? New to me.
Is your definition of wheel hop the occurrence when under hard/straight-line acceleration? When cornering across uneven pavement?
Likely completely different recommendation for different scenarios.
Regardless, and it's a personal and controversial opinion but a strong one, remove the Pirelli's. Burn them. Bury the ashes. Build an apartment building over the unmarked grave. Get some PS2's. Or PSCups. You may still end up with wheel hop. But you'll be happier.

Unfortunately this is a characteristic of the car...magazines even wrote about "axle tramp", another way of saying wheel hop.

Yes it's occuring under hard (full throttle) straightline acceleration. A lot of this is the Pirellis's as they are aging the rubber is getting hard and I'm almost at the treadbar. However, even when they were fresh with plenty of rubber the car would still wheel hop if the rear end broke loose. You didn't get smooth burn outs and such. I know this sounds adolescent but sometimes when you leave hard you may get some wheelspin but it sucks when the car is shuddering and feeling like the rear end is about to give way.
I think a Quaife would help this immensely..

I won't drop the clutch on a modded Porsche . It's asking for axle and clutch wear on a car that isn't really a drag race vehicle .
Even on my 700 with a stage three clutch I think about it but have held off .
I felt that the sweet spot on the 997S was 3rd to 4 gear pull .
With the M3 --the wheels break loose far too easily --no clutch drop needed.
BTW Dave -I can't see any in this clip where the car ran 12.4 . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmRc52wmzhs

The wheel hop is due to lack of grip. I can do it in the wet or on cold days very easily. I agree with Verde that the PZero's are crap, I had them on both Porsches that I owned, the second one I pulled the tires off at about 70% and sold them for best offer ($400 is what I ended up for the 4 tires), better then burning them though. You are in SoCal, so get some good tires PS2's are much better. If you are still getting it then you will need to modulate the throttle on hard acceleration situations. The wheel hop will only slow you down in the long run, smooth equals fast.

More like the warm temperature, it gives you better grip. I had no problem duplicating the wheel hope in both my V8 and V6TT Audi S4's.

For those of you who haven't experienced this...take your 997 out without a LSD and put the tach at 4krpm and drop the clutch. That violent shaking that feels your rearend is about to shoot out the back..that's axle hop. It wasn't so prevelant as it is now as my Pirelli's are about to give up the ghost.
My E46 M3 had wheel hop as well, but not near as bad as this car. My E46 M3 I could actually lay down some rubber.

I personally believe you will never eliminate this completely, just minimize it.
