PCM 3 and iPod i touch

The second generation iPod Touch and the iPhone 3G require 5v for charging (as is provided by a USB port on a computer). This is also true for the latest generation iPod Nano. The original iPhone and iPod Touch can be charged with either 12v (as provided by a firewire port on a computer) or 5v, as can earlier generation iPods such as the iPod Photo and earlier. The iPod cable for the Universal Audio Interface option in a 997.2 only provides the 12v. There are two adapters I know of that will provide the 5v (as well as continue to provide the 12v). They are the Scosche Passport ($25) and the Cablejive Charge Converter ($34).
The problem with both of them is that they are about 1.5 inches long and plug in between the end of the iPod cable and the iPhone or iPod Touch. With all of this connected, there is not enough room to put the iPhone or iPod Touch in the center console compartment and be able to close the lid. I understand that a latest generation iPod Nano with the adapter will just fit in the compartment and allow the lid to close.
Cablejive also makes a cable with a male iPod connector on one end and a female on the other that I may try since the Scosche Passport or Cablejive Charge Converter could then be placed between the Porsche iPod cable and the Cablejive adapter cable, making it possible to place that alongside the iPhone or IPod Touch.
The best answer would be for Porsche or someone to come up with a 12v/5v adapter that would plug directly into the Universal Audio Interface iPod jack and have the current iPod cable plug into the new adapter or to incorporate such an adapter directly into a new iPod cable.

Bummer, what about the old square nano? I could pick one of those up cheap and just leave in the car.

That depends on what you mean by the i Pod.
The 3.0 PCM with the audio interface does charge the iPod models listed in the manual, which is all iPods up through early 2008, I think.
The iPod touch and iPhone models and newer, which have a change in which pins on the docking port are supported for charging, will not charge with the factory system in the 2009 model cars as of yet.

For way less money, since you are leaving it in the car, and assuming you have the universal audio interface that also provides a USB port, you could just buy a giant flash drive for less than $50 and leave it plugged into the USB port.

How about the quality of the music.

The quality of the songs depends on the compression rate you use in creating the files. Its easy enough to create MP3's with variable compression and a compression setting thats high enough to create files that play as good as the original.
I'm not sure if you can create playlists with a USB memory stick drive.. others can chime in. I'll test mine again tonight and let you know what features are supported out of the box. (shuffle, etc... I need to see).

type of ipod
Hello guys,
I am going to register my new 911 coupé that has the universal connector for the ipod, I wanted to know if you use the 120 gb ipod there may be some delays in the management of music if it is filled with many gb of music or whether it is better to use an ipod nano 16 gb.
Many thanks from Italy
