Thumbs up 2005-2008 997S 'real' weight?

Has anyone here actually weighed their car on a scale (autoshop, dump, etc)?

I'd like to know how accurate the 3130lbs unladen weight is that Porsche specs the car at. Thanks!

several magazines have weighed the 997 and found that porsche tends to be optimistic of their weights by about 170 lbs. Interesting too, that BMW tends to be pessimistic on their weights by a similar amount. For example, the new M3 is supposed to weigh 3701, base car. The vehicle is almost always 3550lbs. There are actually photos on the net showing the damn thing an a scale! LOL.
Conversely, The 997 is supposed to weigh 3100 lbs. Most mags put it at 3300-3350. The turbo has been weighed nearly 300 lbs heavier than the manufacturer spec. An utterly stripped base 997 (non-s) runs 3320lbs according to C&D. And they do, in fact weigh them. It matches well with the corner weights reported by Grassroots motorsports.
Why is this??
Can't say for sure, but it certainly has a subjective influence on the appraisal of the vehicles performance that would benefit porsche GMBH......

Thumbs up

That's the exact reason I ask this question.

I'm a member of a BMW forum, and I got into a debate with an M3 owner about this. BMW says the unladen weight is 3704 but people there have weighed their cars under that limit (by about 30-40 pounds) with full fuel, and a driver.

Porsche on the other hand claims 3130 unladen (with fluids), but I can't find any Porsche owners who have weighed their 997s on a scale.

I don't know why so many arguments gets started over these data points. I frequently have my friends who are engineers lament the fat, heavy M3 and the svelte, superlight porsches. When the experts weigh an M3 on a scale, they get 3580 for coupe, 3620 for coupe with sunroof and 3700 for coupe, sunroof and dCT tranny. Compare that to the 3701 published data for coupe and they add 70 lbs for DCT. BMW apparently figures on the heaviest possible configuration with the 70kg driver. With porsche, I can't figure out how they get their numbers, unless they weigh the car without paint and glass. I am not saying that they are lying, but they recently added to the brochure that they weigh the cars with fluids, ETC. But that makes the numbers look even sillier. They have never weighed a current gen. porsche at the published weight in any mag..ever.....I do know some autocrossers that have weighed the 911 very near 3100 lbs, but they take out everything that is not bolted down and have 2 gallons of fuel in the tank. You would be surprised how much carpets, owners manual, tool/tire kit, cigarette lighters, flashlight, and every second screw on the dashboard can weigh! LOL. Either way, I am going to continue worshiping my porsche for the rest of my life
God only knows how anyone can explain the 4500lbs panamerica

I believe Car and Driver listed the tested weight on a 997S they tested at 3300lbs..which sounds about right for me for a nicely equipped 997. If you get sport seats and lightly optioned and ditch the manual floor mats and a .25 of tank of gas you may get it down to the 3250 range.

yeah dave, that sounds about right. i forgot that the car and driver test from last month had the heavier DSG tranny. I would imagine it would add 50 pounds. Does that sound correct?

The recent C&D test was a 997.2 non S, the test I am discussing was the Nov.04 test of a 05 997S.

that's cool! You found a test that I didn't see in my archives. I have been looking for all the tests and comparos on the 997 so I could look at all of them in one place, whilst I wait for my car to arrive. Now I just have to get down to the basement and find that one!
