997 c4s with 40k miles, yes or no?

If it's a CPO it will help but you still have to fix the routine things and I would be very skeptical of a 40K car with CPO . If you want to get out of the car after 50K miles it would be very hard .
Now I did look at auto trader and spotted a CPO black one with 42K miles . Ha .
With all the cars that are out there you can be picky . Very picky.
You have choices. Better to spend the money going in that living in service trying to get out .
Final opinion - Find a car with under 15K miles and CPO in the 50's after negotiations and drive it for a few years putting those miles on it yourself.

Personally, and given the same price, I would trade age for miles. However, I wouldn't go to the extreme on the other end either. I've seen an 06' recently with 3k miles. That's pretty absurd to me.

I'd rather go for an '05 with much lower miles if you have a certain budget in mind. As Yrralis1 apltly pointed out, you may end up spending a lot more in the near term future on repairs and replacements. Take you time, there are a lot of them out there.

It's very different when you are putting the 42K miles on the car Vs buying one where someone slse did. Every mile driven by someone else adds to the car's unknown history .

I regret the decision to buy the BMW instead of the Porsche . The cars don't compare.

are you comparing the m3 v c4s?

so true

I am comparing the M3 to the entire 997 line up . I have driven most of the line up and owned two 997S cars prior to my Turbo .
The M3 is fast , it handles well , and mine has been reliable -but it lacks all of the finesse and sophistication of the Porsche . It's a great daily driver but it really can't hold a candle to a 911 even if every once in awhile it can take it in a straight line.
Every day that you drive the M3 and see a Porsche go by it will leave you with doubts .
The visa versa will not be the case .
The novelty of the M3 test drive is short lived . It is real fun on that first test drive and even fun for about a month before boredom sets in and it starts to feel like muscle car .

Hi everyone! I'm a Newb here! But I have been in the auto seen for about 24 years now and I do have to agree with YRRALIS1~
Although the new E92 M3 and the E60 M5 are both really REALLY nice cars, you are pretty much comparing apples to oranges when comparing them to a Porsche~
Most of the newer BMW's and Mercedes are going with the new trend of high horsepower and High Displacement engines, which is, by all means, awesome but in a sense loses the old concept of squeezing out as much horespower from a smaller displacement engine with weight savings in a sports car~ In which Porsche still follows and keeps it's essence~
Don't get me wrong, the M3 and M5 are GREAT cars and are mechanical wonders! Great handling and Tons of RAW power! My friend has a 07 M% and man it is a GREAT car BUT a TOTALLY different feeling car with a different concept~
BUT the most important thing is what you want out of a car~ And if we were all fortunate enough and lived in a perfect world, The best would be to have BOTH so you can have best of both worlds~
But if that is not possible, you would have to make your choices carefully on what you want and need~ Especially because I know in today's market, all 3 of those cars can be accessible in a similar price range in the second hand market~
But on a brighter note, you should be very happy to be in a situation to be able to choose out of those 3 beauties! No matter what choice you make they are all GREAT cars each with it's own Charisma! Goodluck!

I have issues with miles . Whatever you save to get into the car can be eaten up in repairs --even routine things like tires, brakes , clutch --they all add up. Bigger things include RMS or differential leak on a C4S out of warranty.

besides, the high mile cars are not priced THAT much lower to really worth overlooking the miles. it would have to be 15-20k less from a car with under 10k miles for me to even consider it.
naaaa, i dont think i really would want to even own a car with that many miles unless i put them on myself

I bought a (relatively) high-mileage car two years ago (21K miles) and wouldn't go any higher. It's not a bad balance between cost and risk I suspect. And these days, the prices have dropped so significantly that you can choose what you want or you're really squeaking by - in which case you need to be careful about affording the upkeep. Regardless of miles.
Oh, and re the M3's or M5's, I agree with the other responses. Nice cars, but totally different. I suspect that if you're considering both brands, you don't understand a Porsche yet.

m5 and C2S
I own both 08 M5 and 06 C2S. they are completely different cars. apples and oragnes. I use M5 when i have move the family but whenenver i can I drive carrera. Hard to say why. I guess at the end of the day, M5 is still just a bmw. A recent Car & Driver article said samething when they compared M3 and C2.
