3 Issues with my 997

Hi all. I wish I had better techno-speak to describe the below 3 issues on my 2006 997 C2S Cab:

1) My steering has a "crunchy" feel when I cut the wheel to the maximum in a turn -- only at very low speeds in a parking lot for example. It feels as if the steering wheel is giving me some sort of feedback as if the tires are catching on something. My rims are stock & I'm running PS2's. Is this normal, or is it worth taking it in to the dealer?

2) There is a high pitch whistle when I exceed speeds of about 50 MPH that seems to be coming from the passanger side mirror. I can hear it with the window down, as well as with the top down. Anyone experience this and have a solution?

3) My passenger seat makes a loud squeaking sound over even modest bumps. I've moved the seat to different positions, but that does not help. It goes away if I put pressure between the seat and the middle console where the gear shift is. Anyone experience this and have a solution?

Thank you.

For your first issue, your front tires may very well be catching onto the black rubber guards around the bottom of the front area. My car had this issue. Check to make sure those guards are secure.

I would take these concerns to the dealer and see what they say. You have a warranty and if these concerns are documented and not solved you have some recourse in the future.

Your second item is known problem that Porsche has a fix, I think they use Silicone to seal something up. It is an aerodynamics issue, and the wind is being disturbed more at some small spot on the mirror.

I test drove a used 997 Cab and noticed the same thing! I couldn't tell where it was coming from. I said the the dealer, do you hear that? And of course, of course, he didn't hear a thing.

Wow - I have a 2005 C2S and have the same #1 and #3 issues! When i fully turn the wheels at low speed i sense that the tires are skipping. I thought this may be normal.. the passenger seat squeaking is definately annoying. I find that if i press on the side airbag plastic covering on the right side of the seat, the squeaking goes away for awhile..

I think issue #1 is normal. I've had that in my Cayman S and have it now with my 997S as well.

Have not tried #1, #2 i hear the same noise but once you close the windows, it is gone. I dont know if it is aerodynamics in general or you just can't hear it. #3 no noises on passenger going over bumps for me.

Im dealing with the same crap. All being looked at as we speak at the dealer for the 3rd time! Clutch spring noise, seatbelt compartment buzz (tech said its the rear speaker grill), ashtray rattle, and the wind noise coming from the passanger side front (tech says its the sideview (aerodynamic issues i guess). I totally forgot about the passenger side rattles...was told the instrument cluster would not be covered under my ext warranty and would cost $125..will let you know how it goes.

I have #1 sort-of in my '09 C4S. As another poster said, it feels like the wheels are skipping when turned all the way in one direction or another. Furthermore, it only seemed to me like this happened when tires are cold, so not sure of the correlation there.

+1 on taking it to the dealer. Occasionally I hear lots of screaming from my passenger seat area.

My car goes into the dealer on Apr 13. I'll update this thread with the outcome.

If your driving in approx 40 degree or colder weather and have the wheel full to either direction and accelerate from a dead stop, you will feel as though the wheels are skipping...Your tires are 40 percent harder than normal in this temp and they are quite large. I don't drive my car much in the winter, maybe 4x a month but decided to take a suggestion from the Porsche tec...I had them put high purity nitrogen in all the tires...it doesnt' expand or contract like regular air...tire pressure remains constant no mater what the temp..Call me crazy..but I haven't felt it sense..cost $80.00.

I would say yr 3 issues are unfortunately normal: #1 is not actually a pb. The steering is designed to be very direct and responsive and convey most "information" to the driver, so do yr large rim thin tyres. With wheels turned at max on a parking lot, you can feel the smallest piece of gravel. It's supposed to be good. I have never experienced yr #2 on my C4 coupe 997. With respect to #3, I just have given up taking my car to the dealer every now and then, chasing elusive rattle. They come and go. Every time you think you've snared one, another one pops up. It's amazing how these cars are engineered near perfection and so poorly finished! But you can't say a thing or risk being insulted by addicts who would say you don't deserve a Porsche and should drive a Toyota unless you cope with rattle. So let it be rattle!
