SSK labor cost?!
#16
I doubt I'd try this time around - what I need to do is pay to be allowed to watch a tech do it so I might try it with my next p-car.
Got curious enough to look though and couldn't fine any online instructions. Closest I got was a 5-photo image of the install which wasn't enough - all I saw was the center console sort of had to be lifted out.
You don't happen to have a link to a step by step installation pdf or something like that do you? I saw on Suncoast they have a link to B&N SSK installations next to the parts description page but that link is broken at the moment - no pdf file.

Man 240 sounds reasonable thanks for the info, i will call them tomorrow. sucks that rusnak is not more accomidating
Well the good news is I called and spoke to Fabryce (sp?) at GMG today on another matter - my ongoing narrowing down of what exhaust system to put on, thinking AWE maybe.
Anyway, asked and found out I can just order the SSK via Suncoast and GMG will put it on. I believe it was 2hr labor quote - something like a couple hundred dollars. $240 or something.
I'm fine paying a highly competent tech a couple hundred for peace of mind to stick on my SSK instead of having me blunder around learning to do it DIY.
If you are in SoCal and close or dont mind the drive to GMG I'd just go there. Screw Rusnak - they've not only lost my service business but I'm never buying a car from there again.

Thanks tejoe. Looked through those instructions and now I'm having a bit of nervousness at the thought of getting the SSK put on. Probably still do it but I've always had bad luck with squeak noises on cars and am wondering now with all that center console and side panels being removed/reattached whether I'll have front console squeaks after getting the SSK put on.
For the $465-500 my local dealers want for installation, I might just have to choke that down so that if I have noise isues I can take it back and have them fix any squeaks. Decisions, decisions. Bleh.

Try another dealer or an indy shop. As I mentioned, 1 hour install at an indy - I supplied the SSK. Had dealer install another for me 2 years ago - $625 parts and labor. Ask the dealer to show you the "book" that has the time estimates in it. Try these guys

I know I can get it for a lower cost at a non-dealer, I was going to have GMG install it most likely. But if I have a squeak/noise issue, as bad as the dealer rate is, at least I can go back to them.
Two local dealers have already told me even if I have Porsche OEM parts installed, if it is installed by anyone else but them, they will not do warranty work to fix any related issues like noise, squeaks, etc.
So I'm debating now between letting my local dealers screw me but have the insurance I can go in for whatever might come up vs. go to an indy shop.

For what it's worth, we normally charge about 1.5 hours for a SSK install. We've done some EVOMS short shift kits, including the parts and labor, for less then the labor quotes you're getting. After you've done a few it becomes very easy. The *book* says 2-3 hours so most dealerships will quote you the book rate to make sure they cover the tech's labor rate. Most independent shops will quote you what they know the job will take, or the actual hours spent on it.

I don't want to speak on behalf of GMG, but knowing that they're a very reputable shop and a stand-up group of guys, I'd be willing to guess that they'd offer the same level of support after the install, if not better, then a dealer.

I'm planning to go out to a Porsche DE this year. But what I really wish is there was some sort of Porsche Installation Experience. I think it's the thought of trying it out on my own car that has me nervous.
p.s. not really concerned noise will come from the actual shifter area, more from the center console being pulled apart and then back together. Same reason why if I got PSE instead of aftermarket always on exhaust, I'd do the PSE without the wiring either.
I've just had really bad luck in the past whenever I've had anything touched to the center console, radio, etc - that the console or dash or whatever area squeaks when I had zero noise issues before.

Mozhacker: where are you located? I just installed an OEM SSK last Friday on my car. I bought it from Sunset for $309 plus $11 shipping. As others have said, the first time is the hardest, but mine went pretty smoothly. I did it after work on Friday. I wasn't in a hurry so it took around 3 hours, most of which was taken with removing the shifter boot. Next time will be easier now that I know the trick.
The B&M instructions have many steps that do not apply to the OEM. The OEM install is much easier. If you are nearby I don't mind walking you through it. I am in Irvine. I also took some photos so shoot me your email if you want to see them.

From the sound it, you've got quite a bit of trepidation around doing this yourself. That said, I think you should just write the check and be done with it.
While I know that you can do this yourself if you take your time and follow the instructions, I don't think you feel confident, so write the check and enjoy the upgrade. There's no more hemming and hawing to be done here.
Good luck.

Actually I'll take up Ken's incredibly generous offer.
Being nervous doing something you've never done before I think is normal. Having someone who's done it before walk me through it is a perfect safety net for me.
I'm not that far away relatively speaking Ken (Glendale/Burbank area) - will shoot you an pm. Dinner, lunch, case of wine, whatever your poison for your help, really appreciate it.

SCORE!
Congrats! I knew you had it in you to tackle this yourself, armed with some of 6Speed's best! If you need additional help, PM me, I'd be happy to lend a hand as well.
Of course, it's totally normal to be nervous. I've had many a frightening moment when doing things myself. When I hit those points, I just slow down, check my facts, and call someone who knows more than I do.
Take a look at what Stacy did when installing his SC. Inspiring. And amazing community we have here.
Good luck, and enjoy getting to know your Porsche.
