I did chat with babymd and he did indeed have left sided soot and oil issues; coincidently his engine was replaced by the exact dealership that has my car.

Regards
I don't know yet...I am going to call Thursday and find out, Wed is a holiday here in Canada - (Canada d-eh!...lol). I will let you know.

Since I bought pre-owned car had ~6500kms when I bought it May 1st and now has ~91xxkms, I phoned my sales rep (different dealership 200 miles away) and let him know of my displeasure....he knows the previous owner and said that there was no feedback with regards to this and he wasn't a "car guy" so probably didn't clue in to the high oil consumption. He said there was no way they could have found this on the trade-in inspection or the pre-owned sales inspection and that is why I have warranty.

I am driving the **** out of it before my new engine arrives and maybe I will blow something up....lol.

There were lease offers but since I am not a lease shopper I tend to notice it mostly when others mention it .

As for money off --I think 20K is almost a lock and 30K off a heavily optioned car . Used they can be in the 110 range for an 08 . Leasing factors in term and miles but I think your focus is to face the simplest possible transition .

As for your cuurent (sson to be former car) ... wanna guess if we see one of those used car price threads about a low mi 07 meteor on an independent lot on some other state ?

I would hope a left over '08 T cab would be $40-60k off by now.

Problems can happen with any car --new (like 500) or used .

My rule is simple . Keep a car until it gives trouble . In your case it happened sooner than later but that's actually negotiation leverage at hedging your loss right here . Most people cling to the car sitting in denial hoping for the best . Optimism can only go so far when days pass with displeasure and every mile you drive on that car increases your expense potential . Whether the loss is financial, emotional, time, or all of the three -- loss is loss . Trading this now would set you back 5 to 7 grand and save you months of aggravation . Well worth it in my opinion but its yoir time and money and only you can decide what suits you best.

Comp'd to what I was just offered on the '09 SL63 (40k and 1.9%) I would hope for more like $60k on a $150k '08 tcab, and since there will be a new engine and the pdk replaces the tip maybe even more.

The Mercedes SL deals are incredible . It's a different type of car and both the depreciation on the used SL as well as the new discounts make this a very attractive car for those who want a convertible.

Even though I personally am not a cab person I can't help but notice the price points of these and several other high end cars.

It's terribly disappointing that you and Omes and several others have faced big issues with your porsches . Maybe this most recent service visit can get you back on the road for those last 6 months . It does sound like you've reached a frustration point where a breather from Porsche give some healing time .

500, good luck. I'm interested to see how this turns out.

I've noticed a bit more soot in the driver's side tail-pipe...however, the car uses barely any oil at all. I've used .5qt in 2500 miles. Are some of the left-soot issues normal for a 997.1?

Thanks J.

Keep an eye on that left side and continue watch to your oil levels carefully to be on the safe side, although a half quart in 2500 is great. You might even want to visit your dealer to have them note the condition so if it ever gets worse so they'll have it on record. My soot on the left side is much heavier than the right, actually the right is clean, and when I reved the engine with someone watching or visa versa the left side blew a nasty smelling dark smoke where the right side produced almost nothing at all. Btw, my car used very little oil until all this started 2 weeks ago.

If Porsche handles this by properly addressing the engine and clutch then it would renew my faith in the brand, but if they don't then all all bets are off.

On another note Porsche recently released their June sales figures and they were not good at all, even with the special incentives that ended in June (902 vs 2650 yr to yr comp!!)

This is well documented. Search 'sooty left tail pipe". At your low oil usage this is unrelated to what 500 is reporting. I posted earlier to address this so as not to make others crazy here.

update

Just checked in with the dealership (Champion) the engine still has not been taken out of the car as of 4:00 pm today and its been a full week...I guess they are very busy. The shop foreman said once the engine is out and the head is off they'll contact me...

We are all waiting of course. The valve train noise and detonation plus the fact it's one side doesn't sound like IMS failure. Out of round cylinder should have been noticeable from the start. Oil separator failure gives white smoke I think. D-chunk failure on a 997? Never heard of one. Maybe it swallowed a valve. Hmmm....Btw, you may have to press them about what happened. They are very reluctant to talk about this kind of stuff. (Porsche, not the dealer so much).
