I enjoy my Porsche but would never own one outside of warranty...but then warranty does not guarantee anything anyway.
Good points Mike and yes what your dealer reported is a bit scary.

Yet another day passed today with no news...I wonder if my engine is even out yet? I don't want to call everyday and be a pest so I'm sitting back and waiting for awhile. If I don't hear anything tomorrow then Monday I'll drop by to visit my sick car and see what's up.

Update II The wait continues

Spoke with the service rep today and he told me the engine is out and parts (head) is removed; an email was also sent to Porsche with the dealer's findings and they are awaiting Porsche's response. I asked what they found after disassembly but my service rep said he did not know as apparently the shop foreman was supposed to tell him and they did not have a chance to discuss it; he promised they would let me know first thing in the morning.

Update III

New (reman) engine on the way...apparentely one of the pistons was scored pretty badly and they did not get into any other details (he seemd to try to downplay it) I also asked them to check on the clutch and related parts to find out about the chatter.

I asked about a new engine vs a reman and he said "there are no new engines, only reman units for the exchange". I did not push for new engine as he assured me that the remans are almost completely new with all wear parts replaced with new. The way I look at it is my orginal engine was new and it was defective, so new doesn't guarantee/improve anything.

I hope the new engine will be great and they get my clutch chatter straightened out.

This is standard procedure w porsche. As I said, they become most evasive about details. The replacement engine will be fine. All are remanu. Enjoy...

That's great that they're standing behind it and fixing it so promptly.

Thanks Gpjli, I remembered you saying so; I actually kept that in mind and that's why I didn't push for more info. I just hope they find the source of the clutch chatter as it's been an ongoing issue since day 1 and ruins the driving experience to a great extent.

A friend of mine is the Parts Manager of a large SoCal dealer...he told me that the "remanufactured" engines are new, but are classed as remanufactured for tax purposes.

Actually all manafacturers use reman engines for warranty purposes. I also believe that reman engines in a sense could be better than new as the blocks are seasoned and won't be subject to torque distortions as a new block can. Also with a reman engine the engines are torn down and only the block is used again. All other parts are new and built to original specifications. Porsche along with BMW and other manafacturers have an in house remanafacturing I was told. I think you will be fine.

They wouldn't give one other than "we requested a new engine...." I am going to try and pry when I drop it off to see what one of the techs or shop foreman say.

Question for those that are tech oriented. What could have caused the scoring to this piston in the first place...a broken ring?
