My First Porsche!
#17
Hey, thanks for all the compliments. Today was the first full day of ownership and it was a blast. I think I went on 5 round trips to various stores for stuff I didn't really need. Well, except for Sunset Porsche to pick up clear side lights!
The car is really tight, goes where I point it, and is just incredible. One nit - in auto mode it's a bit of a dog when I stomp the gas. Takes a while to downshift so I wouldn't say it's responsive below 3K RPM.
I've been thinking of a couple mods - EVOMS intake and GT3 front bumper. Will wait a while to look at other PCA cars and get input from folks before doing anything.
I'll send PMs to a few folks to answer questions and connect for cars and coffee.
Cheers,
Dave

congrats buddy
Enjoy the car, one of my favorite color combos in and out... now get a kiddie seat and prepare to enjoy with the family! One of the key factors in my purchase of a 997..... well bought for the right car, congrats... evoms and gt3 front end are perfect mods..... cant go wrong with both. If car didn't come with short shift kit thats a must have assuming its a 6sp....
Really long story short, I've been looking for a 997 for about 3 years and finally found one with the right specs and the right price at Rockville Porsche in Maryland. Had it shipped to Oregon and it arrived yesterday. 2007 911S in slate/sand full leather, sport design wheels, and a bunch of other things that are really nice but not necessary. Original sticker was $101K and I picked it up for $61K with only 5700 miles. It looks, smells, and drives like a new car that I drove at my local dealer last year so I'm thrilled. Might have negotiated a few more $K lower, but it was the right car with nearly 2.5 years of warranty left so I think I did okay.
Due to work and family commitments I've only been able to put 20 miles on it. I don't need to tell you how it drove. Blew past a cop following another oncoming car at dusk tonight. I said a quick prayer, put my turn signal on to justify my hard breaking, and quickly turned off the road onto a side street and headed home. Luck was with me tonight as he didn't turn around. Looks like I'll be heading to an AV installer tomorrow to look at radar detectors :-)
I've been reading 6speed forums for months, picking up an incredible amount of useful information on what to buy, what to pay, how to buy (get full service records, DME, etc.), and so many other things. THANK YOU to so many people for contributing your knowledge and experience - this helped me out immensely!!!
I've got a lot more to write, but I'm going to be selfish and log off now so I can go read the manuals and sit in the car in the garage. Can't open the garage door and take it for a drive as it's past midnight and my 1 year old daughter is sleeping in the room above :-) BTW, she definitely likes the car as you can see from the attached photo.

Drop me a PM when you get a chance and maybe we can meet up. I have the GT3 front bumper so you can check it out in person. I can also give you some more details about our C&C get together on Saturday mornings.

I also am new to the forum and enjoy reading. It is addictive to stay here and keep reading. I have a question which I am sure has been asked many times on this forum...I have purchased many cars, mostly new, but wondered with your long range dealing?? Somewhere in the process do you actually drive the car prior to purchase or do you take the salesman or service advisors word for the actual test drive? I realize all the info the records tell you but nothing is like a seat of the pants drive in my books. I have never purchased and shipped before. Thanks for your time. It really looks like you have got yourself quite a ride!!!

P.S. I'm going to reply to as many things as possible to get my post count to 15 so I can send PMs. Pardon my excessive posting tonight :-)

Oregon is a hard region IMHO. We have 1 dealer in Portland and one in Bend (a few hours away) and they don't keep a lot of inventory. Frankly, for something that costs this much I would always look around the country and I wouldn't settle for something just because it's close. That said, I came damn close to settling for other 911s a few times . . .

Yeah, that's my 1 year old daughter. I love her more than anything, but I have to say she cost me a lot of money. I could have bought a Cayman for $30K less but I had to get the 911 for the back seats. Actually, I love the rear fenders of the 911 (as seen in the mirror when driving or just looking at the car) and it's a solid car so I have no regrets. I just hope she appreciates the car like I do!

Congratulations Dave! It's definitely one of the most beautiful color combinations out there! Kudos!
From experience, drive it anyday Dave, anywhere and enjoy it! I mean I'm not saying you should drive it like you stole it but drive it like you mean it!
Don't worry about bad roads, or stone chipping the paint, or scratches on the leather, or dings etc, nothing is worth getting yourself worked up for those things, its not a question of 'what if this or that happens, its a question of when it will happen' and there is a clever remedy for every single occurence. The most important thing is to enjoy it in good health, with your family and friends.
Everything, whatever it comes to, can be fixed without any hassle, so the best part of the ownership is to drive the hell out of the car Because there is no substitute.
The coolest thing would be buying a childs seat and place it in the back, and let her enjoy it too Drive safely and welcome to 6!

Good advice - thank you! I should make a sign for the dash that reads "Whatever it is, it can be fixed" :-) Yeah, I may do a DE event at the local track or a PCA rally, but I don't plan to track it. I just plan to get to work in 1/2 the time every day :-)

Thanks! I had a bit of a panic attack after buying the car (while it was on the transport from Maryland to Oregon) - thought maybe I made a mistake and the slate gray was too dull. Ideally I would have ordered meteor gray.
Then I came across a great thread with pics that compared slate to meteor and it set me at ease. I may respond to that thread in more depth, but my impression of slate gray is that it can look dull / matte gray when dirty or when it's cloudy. When it's clean/waxed and sunny, it's a richer gray than meteor and lighter than atlas. It's a warmer gray too as several people have said that they see some tones of brown and green. I think it goes very well with the sand beige full leather and I couldn't be happier.
Long reply, but that's the short version of what I have to say about slate gray!

Dave,
Congrats on the new car, welcome to six speed, and great to see another person from Oregon on here.
Car looks great and the price you paid was stellar. Way to be patient to find the right car. I had a tough time looking in Oregon (the two dealers here are a joke when it comes to their pricing) and I ended up buying in Northern California. Your color combo is really nice and nice wheels that came with the car. If my car came with your wheels instead of the lobster claws, I don't think I would have switched mine out so soon.
Look forward to more of your postings on here. It's a great forum, good people, helpful people, strong sponsors, and an overall nice vibe.
I think you're like only the 4th person from Oregon on here (the Northwest section of 6spee is almost all Washington/Seattle folks). If you get this post early enough today, come on down to Bridgeport Village this morning (8ish am to about 10am) as there's a Cars and Coffee every Saturday there. Finally if you are interested in any mod's to your car, drop me a PM and I can get you in touch with some good shops here in Portland.
Congrats and welcome.
p.s. It's good that the handprints on your bumper are small

I'm certainly interested in meeting folks in the Beaverton / Tigard / Portland area so I'll be at the cars and coffee if we're in town and I welcome local folks to send me a PM to meet up and talk P-cars.

Congrats, Dave...a great looking car!! Enjoy with your family, and like the others have said, drive the hell out of it. You work hard, and paid good dollars for the car, so now is the time to enjoy the rewards.
Glad you were able to work out out a deal at Rockville Porsche and have it shipped to you. When you get a moment send me a note and let me know whom you used for transport, as I too am looking at a long distance purchase.
By the way use to live in the Rockville, MD area before I moved to KY, so it was kind of interesting to see you purchased from them.
