997S with Tip vs Manual

Need some advise!

I currently have an 06 base Carrera 6spd and my warranty is going to expire in 3 weeks. My car is pristine and has only 7700 miles on it.

So I ran across a really nice 07 S Tip which is loaded with only 3200 miles on it.

I put a deposit on the car today.

What do you all think, am I going to be sorry?

Will the 07 S tip be slower than my base Coupe with a manual? The only thing the S doesn't have is the Chrono pack.

Is the old Tiptronic trans really that bad and why do so many turbo owners choose the tip over the manual?

I had a tip in a boxster and thought it was fine. It was my DD. I think some choose the Tip in the turbo because it posts quicker times than the manual. At least according to Porsche's numbers.

The tip is absolutely fine. It's no PDK, but I strongly suspect that despite what you might read or think, most of us simply aren't good enough drivers to always make the most of the 6-speed... Enjoy the new car!

It's all a matter if you feel like rowing through the gears. Only you will know the answer to that. I'd personally keep the manual standard Carrera. It's still a great car to own. Besides, I think a "true" sports car "feel" needs that clutch engagement and heel-toe shifting. It separates it from all the others out there. I'm not saying the Tip or PDK is bad, it's just to some the automatic takes away that visceral feel. Hope you make the right decision for YOU.

the big decision here is going to an S. i have an 07 997S with a tip and love it. i sit in a bunch of traffic all the time and hit the track quite a bit.

it's not pdk, but it's fine and a helluva lot better in bumper to bumper IMO

I just bought an 07 C2S with tip and I'm a bit disappointed in the responsiveness at lower RPMs. I think it's very slow to respond when you're cruising in 5th gear and you stomp on the gas. PDK was much more responsive and of course the manual gives you ultimate control.

That said, I'm happy with the tip overall because I don't want the work of a manual transmission and I want my wife to be able to drive the car (just kidding about the last point, but I tell her that's one reason!). I've only driven the car for 4 days so I need to learn more, but I've basically been keeping it in manual mode and selecting gears manually to keep the rpms up for more responsiveness.

There's no doubt that the convenience is a plus. But beyond direct connection when rowing through the gears, there is the visceral sense of a completely direct engagement from engine, through transmission to wheels and the ground. The auto (not the PDK) dilutes this by interposing a viscous coupling in that link and the sense of the engine spinning out of sync with the motion of the car just removes the sports car feel for me. To be fair, the Porsche lockup converter is better than most, but it's undeniably there. I can't speak for you, but I could never do it.
I always wonder when, after the 997TT debuted with slightly better acceleration times with the tip and many people purchased them, that more than a few might have been disappointed with the experience.

For me the 6MT is the only transmission that I would want in a Porsche 997. I wouldn't trade it for a tip or a PDK. I would stay with your 997 C2 and if you are hell bent on a new one, find exactly what you want, there are lots of cars available.

I have an 06 S Tip and love it. I don't feel that I'm missing anything, then again, I really like the convenience of an automatic car, so I'm definitely on the extreme end of things.

I wouldn't buy the S Tip just because it's an S that happens to be a tip. There are definitely many more 6 speed options on the open market than tip (in my research at least); you have the ability to be choosy here. Find a car that fits you the best!

Good luck.
