2005 Carrera S - New Guy

Hey
New guy here. I have a 2005 Carrera S with sport chrono that I purchased from a dealer last december. It has 20k miles on it. I love the car, its my second Porsche, but the last one was about 9 years ago and was a 1968 911.

First time to the shop was today for an oil change and some annoyances.
  • Exahaust was making weird noises (catalytic converter turned out to be bad, replaced under certified warranty)
  • Headlight Adjustment Beam failure (sensor was cracked in half, not covered!)
  • Gas lid door hinge broke (not covered!)
I was also told my brakes fluid needs flushing and my clutch is on the ropes so I have a couple of questions for the more experienced than me 997 owners...

What's the story with brake fluid flushing and how often do you do it?
Is it worth looking at a better clutch? Someone mentioned its only worth going away from stock if I get the flywheel lightened at the same time.

I drive pretty hard and plan on doing a few other minor modifications and taking it to a few track days a year.

Thanks for any help.

Eric

Eric,

Welcome to 6 speed. I am running a LWFW and I still have my original clutch. You can go Sach's Stage 2 clutch, but it isn't necessarily going to give you extra life, it might but it might not.

As for Brake Fluid, I change it every few track days, if the dealer recommends it then it might be due to time, it is an easy DIY project if you have a power bleeder. I would do it as it is a cheap insurance policy.

The Brake Fluid should be flushed every 2 years as per owner's manual/dealer service.

ok thanks I will get it flushed then. I have worked on cars doing just about everything to them but they were all cheaper and slower... I'm still intimidated by this one!

I'm thinking that if the clutch was going when I got it then I probably don't know what I missing with a stock clutch. I let one of my customers drive it and I think he put it over the edge... he totally smoked the clutch and hit the rev limiter. I learned my lesson there!

Are you in Vancouver BC? I'm just outside Seattle. What tracks do you go to?

Nice car . Things are going to be ok . Your service sounds routine . It's actually not bad either for a 5 year old car to have a few things . The clutch will be a big job if it needs replacing . I estimate 9 hrs labor and parts . Maybe you can negotiate a complete package for all the service in one lump sum .

I was intimidated by the brake fluid change, but it is simple.

I am in Vancouver, BC. I go to PRI a lot, will be there on Tuesday. Going to do my first PIR and ORP in August. I also go to a local track (Mission) but it is not as much fun as PRI.

I was more nervous about changing the brakes . Imagine if the car didn't stop . When I handed the key to the tuner I was more nervous about this than any other mod I did to my car.

OP,

Welcome back to the P-Car club. Your car looks great (don't forget to change out to some clears). Lot's of Porsche's up in Seattle (but not so many down here in Portland).

Congrats and drive her safe.

Its not a bad idea to get the brake fluid changed since you just picked it up.

If you are going to track a fair amount might want to go with motul for a higher boiling point and also invest in some track pads (I use pagid yellows).

As for the clutch if you like how it is now stick with it unless you do the LWFW. I've got over 39K miles on my car with around 7-9K track miles and Im still on my original clutch with no problems. I just work on being smooth with my shifts. And while I would like a LWFW and a heavier clutch for 1st and 2nd gear, by the time I'm in 3rd, 4th, 5th it really makes no difference as the differences in RPMs get smaller.

Might want to consult with an independent reliable porsche shop so they can do your brake fluid and OEM clutch cause it will save you quite a few bucks as opposed to going to the dealership.

Thanks for the replies! ok so I'll definitely get the fluid changed. yeah I need to get started on some modifications including the clear lenses.

I want to go to the track with it all stock otherwise just to experience it once but I think I will get the clutch done first as to not spoil my trip. I went to three track days last year at PRI with my Ducati Hypermotard and it was a blast... here are some track pics I'm #28. While I was there I kept thinking I wanted to come back and try it in a car. Flying through turn 2 and then braking hard in to turn 3 has to be a blast in a Porsche
