In looking at cars how much markup is a new engine worth?
If you are checking out CPO'ed 997's how much would you say a car is with a new dealer installed engine worth over a car with say 30K miles?
thanks
thanks

Depends on the circumstance but I'm not sure it's worth anything extra on a 30K mile car. It's an indication that the car had serious mechanical problems and was potentially abused. Also depends on how "new" the engine is and what the warranty on it is.

New engine; backed by full Porsche CPO warranty.

I'd kind of worry about such a thing being disclosed as a tactic for higher price and as mentioned above - even with a good reason - it would make me nervous.
I thought sales training always taught to avoid bringing up negatives; there's two: engine died and had to be replaced / price is higher as a result - great!

I wouldn't pay a premium for it. Not sure why you should. Best case, something was wrong in the build and it just broke. Worst case, prior owner abused it and it happened to be covered under warranty. Problem is that you will not no which case was the reason. I would protect the downside and believe it was the latter case. Therefore, I wouldn't buy it unless it was heavily discounted.
500 - nothing personal! Good thing you have a lease. I'm not sure it would be a plus for resale.

ryem3,
I would not disagree with you if we were talking about a normal engine. But the potential problems of the M96 engine are well known to many porsche buyers.
From what I have read and leanred porsche has the improve the engine to minimize the chance of IMS and other major failures.
Getting a new engine should give a buyer the best chance of long term reliability.

This is kind of a no brainer. The 30 K engine could blow up the day after you drive it off the lot for the same reason the other engine was replaced. Take the new engine car. As to the value, if it comes with a full CPO warranty and an after market warranty is worth $ 1,000 or so a year, if you spent $4 K more for the new engine car you'd be at breakeven. Anything less than that would be a bargain. Plus you have the added comfort of knowing that Porsche replaced any potentially weak parts in the new motor with parts that are less likely to fail.

But will Porsche (PFS) make a big deal about "new" engine and try to charge more for it, or will they just be mum and sell the car as they would any other?

The only negative with a replacement engine is, the car is no longer a number matching car and generally that would bring down the value at resale/auction. If you were able to speak with the original owner and there was a good reason for the new engine without abuse etc (as in my case) it would a better choice. Also, if it was shown the engine was replaced under warranty then that would lead one to believe abuse may not have been part of the replacement as Porsche most likely would not warranty an engine with countless serious overrevs etc.
the engine failed a few weeks after being CPO'd...so I don't think abuse comes into the picture unless they missed during the inspection

If it was replaced a few weeks after being CPO'd? Is it your car or are you looking to buy it. I've seen other cars with replaced motors for sale, BMW's, etc. I've never seen one priced with a premium. Not quite the same, but similar to a new clutch. Great to have a new one, but leaves you wondering why it was replaced so early.

It's certainly possible and/or they CPO'd it anyways...guess we'll never know the actual background unless they will contact the original owner and ask if you can speak with him/her.

I'm very glad I leased ,as I can only imagine the poor resale for 07 S's these days let alone 6 mos from now when the lease is up.
