Bmw M5 VS Merc E63 AMG?
Hey there. i am planning to change my 05 porsche c2s to either one of the sedan - 2006 Bmw m5 or 2007 Mercedes E63 amg. i know that mercedes has changed their e-class model but i'm not really a huge fan of it. Anyways, just want the opinion of you porsche owners since it would not be fair if i would have posted this on a bmw or mercedes forum.
i've test drive the e63 amg but honestly, i was quite disappointed. driving wasnt fun at all. but i did not do a full throttle on the e63 because the owner was sleeping on the passenger's seat. ahhaha.
and also, i've never driven an m5.. so.. i really need the opinion of people who have already driven both these cars!
thanks!

I had an 08 ///M5 prior to my 997.
Here are some of my thoughts.

How can you ask this question without even having driven an M5?
Go drive it, you'll love it, it's one of the greatest cars on the road today. Practical, luxurious, comfortable, roomy, and absurdly fast and handles like it's on rails.

the porsche is my daily drive car and since i live in san francisco, it has been extremely annoying to drive the car around the city because of the harsh roads.. =(
If i have a choice of course i would keep it. but a sedan which fits more people more comfortably will be a better choice for me. kinda tired of a coupe (since i've been driving it for about 3-4years now) and definitely wants a change. heheh =) but i cant bear to part with my porsche..... so confused. been bothering me for the past 3 months.

isnt the m5 very jerky? thats what i heard. hahahah i'm not sure though.
and thanks omes! i've read your post.however the 2 reasons below..
"- that I don't need a 4 Door Sedan
- Difficult to drive in the winter and was sitting with x2 sets of rims already"
i do need a sedan and there's no snow in san francisco. ehehehhehe.
but u've been quite a help with the post! thanks alot.

I've heard that the new Cadillac CTS-V is stellar. I personally couldn't deal with the depreciation ht that thing would take in the first year but it's supposed to be head of the class in sport saloons.

Depends on the intended usage IMO. I drive about 110-120 miles round trip, mainly freeway and haul around clients. For this use, I thought the E63 was the better car with a better overall ride for my passengers and great freeway coasting power, plus the crap resale value didn't hurt either in buying my car.
I got to admit though, the M5 is the more lively and better handling car but for my long distances, and passengers, I chose to go the Mercedes route. Also, the SMG wasn't all that pleasant. Maybe with time I could of got it to shift smooth, but it was a real pita when I was test driving it.
Personal taste IMO, I've always been the BMW nut but I guess I needed a change....

OP: What are you looking for in a sedan? If performance, you should go with the E55, the 55K engine is great and with a little modification (Pulley & ECU tune ~ $1800), you will leave the E63 or M5 behind... The E63 revised styling is nicer but it's missing the low end grunt. The M5 is a nice car but SMG is NOT for everyone, it's fast in triple digits speed but how often can you use such power? The E55 has crazy low end torque and it will plan many smiles on your face from a dig acceleration. GL with your decision.

No trouble at all, don't get me wrong, the ///M5 is a supercar of sedans, you just need to look at your needs, someday for me with kids ect....I may look at getting into one again.

no question. E55. I own one and its an amazing car. I drive the car hard and am always surprised at the ability braking, handling, etc and I always have a huge smile on my face. And it has certainly decreased the time I spend in my X50.

I'm local - drove both, and chose the M5. Acceleration is almost identical, but very different feeling - 63 has TORQUE, and the M5 has revs. Ride - suspension much stiffer on M5, soft setting is like hardest setting in the 63.
If you want a comfy car for local SF and highway travel, 63 is probably better for you. If you are looking for a little less comfort in the ride, yet a much more rewarding skyline or other twisty road experience, go for the M5. As far as the SMG, if you can drive a manual, you can drive the SMG flawlessly - the computer just does what your left foot used to do.
However, make no mistake, the M5 is a definite compromise car. It is big, 4K lbs, yet stiffly sprung. I no longer want to compromise, so I'm switching to a softer DD and getting a more focused weekender.
Good luck deciding - I'm having similar problems deciding on my weekender.
