PCM3 - charging latest ipod/iphone

HI everyone,

I recently took delivery of my first Porsche 911 and i love it. I acquired a 997.2 (PDK, PSE, Crono, Navi, ipod, bose etc) and found out the my ipod nano doesnt charge - it is the lastest generation (slim and long).

I read the two threads which discusses this in detail and purchased a Scosche passPORT for 20 pounds. When i connected it yesterday, it still wont charge? Am i doing anything wrong?

The original cable i got from Porsche was faulty, they changed it to one with the round jack leading to a USB and ipod connector (cant remember what the first looked like). That cable alone wont charge either!

Any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated

You either got a bad second generation cable or something else is wrong with the system. My new ipod charges just fine with the new usb cable.

Just in case you didn't know this...I felt like a goof when I had the same problem and didn't know how the Porsche-supplied cable works. You have to plug the USB into the USB input in the console AND plug the iPhone pin connector in to your iPhone/iPod. That should allow charging of your phone/mp3 player.

The cable i have has the round jack (slots nicely into the ipod socket) and in the other end has a split of two cables, one being the USB stick and the other being the ipod connector. Is this equivalent to yours RandyP?

If you got the new cable - the one with the iWidget connector on one end, and the two connectors on the other end (Round DIN connector for the iPod interface and 2nd USB connector to get the 5v charging power for the iWidget 5v charging pin)... then it should work with ALL iWidgets. If its not working, something else is wrong.
3rd party adapters should not be used with that cable.

If you still have the original cable with just the iWidget connector and the round DIN connector, then the 3rd party adapter that creates a 5v charge line from the 12v charge line is needed.

It worked, thanks Minok and RandyP - was not even aware that Porsche has come out with a cable to fix the issue - obviously, i was not creative enough to think of plugging in the USB as well

I have a non-related question - on PCM 3 - is its screen same inactive just as on PCM2.1 or is it, heck, what`s the word, clickable/pressable like on iPhone?

The PCM 3.0 is a touchscreen, sort of like the iPhone. It works very well. Not as smudge resistant as the new coating on the iPhone 3GS but the matte finish does a pretty good job of hiding/not collecting smudges.

Glad we could help out. Don't feel bad; as I mentioned I was clueless too until I read somewhere what the USB part of the "Y" cable was used for.

All the best.

Trust me... its ok to ask. You DONT want Porsche to write an instruction sheet for the cable... it will be 10 pages long and tell you the same information in 3 different ways, each way differing just enough to confuse you. ;-)

I am going to be re-reading this thread in a few weeks. i am getting an iphone 3GS on 9/15 when my verizon contract is up. I am tired of my blackberry and love my itouch ipod, so I am going for the iphone. Especially since 9/15 is my b-day! Please tell me I won't be disappointed! Also, I have the new universal audio interface cable...I hope it's the right one!
