I agree, seems like a decent price to me. I have generally found Car Max to have pretty competitive prices. If you like the car and don't need full leather or Nav etc., go for it. Good luck.

Right, no nav or leather, but other nice options including the PSE. Really seems like a very good price. Many of the cars I checked out in my search that had "very good prices", turned out to be multiple owner cars, sometimes 3 and then had questionable DME scans. Depends what options you want on the car - also no sport seats.
Also, almost forget, check the paintwork. For this money, you really need the PPI, in my opinion. IF all the above checks, seems like a pretty good deal. Have you run the carfax? Do you have the DME scan - any recordings range 3-6?

Great looking car and price but my hesitation is that it's not an authorized Porsche dealership. Plus it's not a private owner (records could be discussed easier) . I tend to shy away from independent lots except when selling a car (they offer more than dealership and less than private sale) .
Unsually independent lot cars are priced to sell and often come via auction . Sometimes this works out well but not always -thus there's risk .
My advice is to obtain a full inspection including paint and DME .
Drive the car too .. sit in it and check every control .
Then decide .
If everything checks out --it's a great deal .
But never let the price blind you from all aspects of a used car purchase . Hold that car up to every standard that you would expect and if it passes --buy it . If not ... walk .

Thanks everyone. This is my first dealing with CarMax.
The car is in Las Vegas and they are shipping it to Modesto for me. That's about an hour away from me. I paid the $200. for the shipping and it takes about two weeks _and_ it locks the car down to me in the meantime - first right of refusal. That gives me time to set things up. Once the car gets to Modesto I have about a week to get out there and look at it.
There are no P dealers in Modesto, CA (cowtown) so I will have to get a local shop do the PPI, is that feasible? Anyone have experience with CarMax?
Other info -
- AutoCheck checks out (in service date was 3/31/08) - need to run a Carfax
- Purchased at Hendrick Porsche in NC
- No DME or other info yet
Worse case is I look at it and decide no and I'm out $200. and maybe the PPI.

Yikes - price creep is also setting in, a new lightly equipped Base 2009 PDK for 'only' $10K more - ahhhhhhhh

I would advise the carfax. The $40 for the carfax could maybe have saved you the $200 shipping charge. Anyway, for a good PPI you will really need a P dealer. Already seems a little interesting with a car in Vegas that was originally sold in NC. Anyway, check that baby out and let us know if you need any help.

Just ran CarFax - everything checks out -Thanks.
I can see the PPI is going to be a problem in Modesto. I'll keep you posted.
Either way, if I do decide to pass I'd be happy to let another 6speed'r know of the car...
Thanks again.

Pleasanton which is right next to Livermore has a Carmax. Walnut Creek also has a Carmax which would theoretically put you very close to a Porsche dealer in each case. Sucks that it would be a long drive for you to start... but then it would be just a few minute test drive with the salesperson to a real dealer for a PPI and DME report. That peace of mind would be worth it's weight in gold. I can't imagine that they would charge you more if they're just redirecting to one of those dealers a few hours away. Let us know. Good luck!

My bad... maybe those don't exist. I tried google and it had a list of Carmaxes and listed Walnut Creek and Livermore. I couldn't find it on their website either. Sacramento is another option. I live about 5 minutes from the Roseville store and I know for a fact the Porsche dealer is about a 10 minute drive away. Depending on where you are near Modesto... maybe Roseville is the best bet.
Edit... just checked Carmax's website and they don't list WC or Livermore. I was able to find references to those in THE GOOGLE! Maybe those have gone out of business. I though I heard that Carmax was contracting recently. The Sacramento/Roseville store appears to be in Roseville. That's your best bet. Niello Porsche is in Rocklin... it's about a 10 minute drive. They are reasonable people and it's were I get my 997 serviced. Maybe worth a try. I don't know of any Independent shops down that way though I'm sure they exist... particularly in the Bay Area.

Agree with yrallis's comments. Watch out for non-Porsche dealers. I like private party in order to get a history, maintenance records, and a general feeling about the seller's pickyness with car maintenace and care. Also, car lots are real good at detailing and masking cosmetic defects--respray / airbrush etc.
