Road Trip Advice in the US

Folks,

I'm heading to a couple of conferences in the US in October, one in Las Vegas and another in Orlando. There is 3 days between them - how practical is it to drive from Vegas to Orlando in that time?

I get over there pretty often and am very comfortable driving in the US so that's not an issue. Its just the distance / time equation I was wondering about.

Thanks!

A little tight. You will have very long driving days and little rest. 5 to 7 days would be wonderful.

Orlando to Houston can be done in 15-16 hours. I have lived in in Orlando and Houston and have made that drive many times. Now Houston to Vegas I dont have a clue but it is 870 miles across Texas. Houston is about 130 miles in. So that would leave 740 to El Paso. I think it can be done but it will be 2 1/2 to 3 days of long drives. Once you get past San Antonio there is not much to see until you get to Vegas. Google Maps says Houston to Vegas is 1469 miles.

You'll be driving the whole time. 5 days would be fine. Instead, fly to Miami, rent a Hertz/ Ford Shelby rent-a-racer and enjoy the 3.5 hour drive up the Florida turnpike !!!

I agree, that's too far for a three day drive.

It is drivable, but not such that you would enjoy the drive and you would get there exhausted and sore.

Better to fly and use the saved days to relax by the pool.

From Houston to San Antonio is pretty boring, but as stated, west of there its nothing for hours and hours and hours until El Paso (though the speed limit is 80mph at parts, if that matters). The New Mexico... scenic, but bits of the I-10 can get sand-storm shutdowns at times, Arizona then gets super hot... not a trip I'd want to do.

Be sure to check 1-way car rentals in advance to make sure the cost is reasonable. I needed to drive my dogs back to TX was recently quoted $600 USD for the cheapest compact car from LA to Dallas (1500 miles)...ouch.

500 miles per day in a nice car, like a Porsche, is pretty much my limit to keep it fun. My wife and I have driven 1000 miles in a day, trading off driving, but that's a lot in a day. That wears you out.

I would map out a backroad route among Vegas, Yosemite, Grand Escalante/Grand Canyon, Salt Lake, and Denver, get a non stop to Orlando.

Just quoting you to point out that your Cayman (avatar) is HAWT. Those cars are awesome and I hope Porsche positions them correctly in the marketplace going forward.
