Good Deal on Mobil 1

Went to AutoZone this morning to pick up a quart of oil. Regular price of 0w-40 is $6.99 a quart. They have a special: buy 5 quarts at regular price and get a free Mobil 1 oil filter ($12.99 value) and Gumout ($6.99 value). I buy the five quarts and immediately return the oil filter and Gumout for a store credit of nearly $20.00. I used the $20.00 to buy car care products. The net result is $3.00 per quart of oil.

Mobil 0W40 would not even be a good deal if the gave you $6.99/quart to take it off their shelf.

Mobil1 15W-50 -Not Porsche recommended even though they recommend 5W-50 which is an impossible oil to find and the same weight as 15W-50 with better cold start properties.

Motul 8100 X-Cess 5W-40 - Porsche recommended with much better properties than all Mobil1 oils but expensive.

For every day driving 0w-40 is fine. For track junkies a heavier weight is preferred. There is nothing wrong with Mobil 1, it is ranked as one of the top 5 synthetics.

Yeah noboby is saying anything bad about Mobil1. 99's comments were about Mobil1 0W-40 which I agree with. 99 actually uses Mobil1 just not 0w-40.....

FWIW, starting on page 79, January 08 issue of Panarama is a good article on Porsche motor oils.

Ok. Thanks guys.

Is the 0W oil deemed to 'thin' for what the engine needs during track events? I'm not planning on any more track days until next year so I need to work through the 6qts I just bought. Doh! Considering the current consumption rate for my car, I'm guessing that won't be too long...

I thought the oil consumption was high on my Audi's 4.2l V8 but Porsche's normal consumption value is even higher. I guess so long as it's not abnormally high or not at all then I'll not have much to worry about.

It depends what you consisder "normally high". IMO, having to add any oil between changes is abnormally high and I would not tolerate it.

Yeah, I guess I've gotten used to hearing the company line from dealers and the Owners Manual. Audi was allowing up to 1qt/1000 miles and my '09 C2 is using a bit more than that now. I'm chalking it up to it being a young engine and will be keeping an eye on it.
