low/high Milage

Hi All,

Tried to do some searching on this but couldn't find any information. I have read a couple of threads with members looking to buy their first Porsche. What I did notice was recommendations to look for cars with moderate milage. Low milage cars(garage queens) were reputed to have more issues than daily drivers.

Interesting. On the BMW front, most M's with above average milage are looked over.

What would an annual average of be for Porsches? 5-9k miles per annum?

There's two general camps of thought like you've stated .

Camp 1 -low mileage = pristine = less wear = closer to new .
Camp 2 - low mile < daily use due to seals which crack . Daily use +proper maintenance = a generally reliable car . A low mile car could have spent years in the shop going nowhere . Mileage rocks !!!! Driving it hard = "the way it should be driven" !!!

In terms of dollars -- low mile , no stories, good DME = King !!!!!

So where do I stand ? In the middle . I believe that moderation is key .

I would ESTIMATE an ideal mileage at 5K- 8K a year with decent drive distances at each startup.

I do not believe that high miles is a plus .
I do not believe that hard driving every time is a plus.
I do not believe that a garage sitting for years is a plus .

I do believe that maintenance is important.
I also believe that the products used on the car are important.
I also believe that the efficiency and professionalism of those who work on your car are crucial . This applies to all cars of any mileage.

I agree with you Larry, as hard as I claim to be with my car, I am still pretty easy with it in the street (about 1/2 the milage).

I am not sure of the number, but it says in the manual that there is a minimum milage that must be driven in order to to have the warranty intact. I think this statement alone tells you that Porsche feels these cars need to be driven in order for them to operate trouble free.

My '05 C2S, heavily modified, has 45k miles on it, and it's just getting broken in! I believe that each vehicle is different. While I drive my car every day in all conditions, I baby it. I replace anything that looks, feels, or seems worn immediately. I condition the leather, renew the seals, change the oil, meticulously polish and seal the paint, etc. Mine is going to hit over 200k miles and run like the wind, baby!

My Hennessy Porsche service rep, whom I've grown to respect tremendously, when I got my first Porsche a few years ago, gave some advice: drive it hot and put it away wet. It's great advice, just be sure to keep up with maintenance so nothing ever gets tired.

I like cars driven rather than 4 year old cars with 4K miles. I feel not driving a car enough has it's own sets of worries. At least I know if the car was driven, the person did their mileage maintenance on the vehicle. A lot of owners are stupid when it comes to maintenance thinking if they don't drive it, they don't have to change fluids because the "mileage" isn't there... The jiffy lube generation lol of thinking

I generally agree with Larry.

That being said I do look at reliable 997's that have seen the track a few times as year as good buys. Why? Well, there is nothing like the track to weed out the "weaker" engines/builds.
