Car and Driver 10 Best Omits 997
...but includes Boxster/Cayman. In their 10 Best they include a Ford Fusion Hybrid over a 997 and a Corvette.
They set a price limit at I think $80k, and with this limit you could just about fully trick out a Boxster or Cayman, yet have to stick w/ a bare bones Carrera. They also claim that you get better "driver enjoyment" out of a Boxster/Cayman.
Having owned both a Boxster S (which was tricked out) and a 997.1 with a few mods, I have to go with the 997. The Boxster interior is very cramped for taller people which made it tough for me. Don't get me wrong, I think Boxsters/Caymans are great cars, but...can't say I agree with C&Driver's conclusion here.

I also have to admit that the Boxster offers comparable performance to the 911 and Corvette at a significantly lower price than the 911. I am glad I was able to get my 911 but the Boxster offers a lot of fine car for the $$.

don't worry too much about the C&D list, they always pick the same car company/cars for every years. I guess they don't want to upset anyone.
as far as I can remember, boxster has always been on the list since its introduction, and 911 was never on as they will only give one space to Porsche.

I don't disagree. If $80k is the price cap, I'd rather have a Cayman/Boxster S with nice options than a bare bones Carrera.
An 09' Carrera S with my specs is in the $100k range...if which case, getting a used 997.1 GT3 makes a whole lot more sense to me.

I believe a new Cayman S would be a nice little treat on the track With a mid-engine rear wheel drive and 320 HP & 273 lb-ft torque it should be amazing!
Throw some racing wheel and tires along with a suspension upgrade, and then just enjoy
