How does a performance air intake make the car sound better?
#2
The motor makes an incredible level of sound at the intake, its just much easier to muffle the intake sound since it is not hot exhaust gases.
Porsche has strict drive by sound standards to meet for EU regulations, etc. So they have to build a quiet box that still is relatively free flowing.
The cone type filters with extension tubes muffle the intake sound much less than the tuned airbox does but there is potential for water intrusion and or warm air from the engine bay.
The stock box is pretty good. I just capped the resonator to hear the wail of the engine in the upper range.

Could you explain how you did this? I'm interested in bringing a bit more sound into the cabin under WOT.

What you hear is the intake, not exhaust, and depends upon which system you are talking about. For example, the Fabspeed silicone tube does not seem to change much at all (noise) whereas the Evo MS cai, which comes with a v flow Synthamax filter, will really scream when you first put it on and get above 5500RPM.

I just found a cap around 2" diameter and fit it right over the resonator opening. On and off in less than a minute. You can only hear the difference after about 5k rpm. Cut the cap down so it flushes out with lip and then fit the rubber hose back down over the cap.

What kind of car? I put an EVOMS on my '84 911 and it did make a difference in sound. It's design made it sound like a little turbo. I also have an EVOMS on my C4S. Didn't notice too much of a sound difference but I was looking for better airflow with my B&B exhaust, EVOMS Headers and software. The intake for me was more about performance....not sound.
