Things you like and dislike with your Porsche
#31
- I am not a big fan of any of my fellow Porsche drivers in the bay area, as I have yet to see a single one that will as much as wave at you as you pass by. I'd say the community here is excellent, the community on the road in my area is something else. Maybe I'll try PCA locally though .

What I like:
Everything about driving it (handling, torque, power, 6 speed transmission)
The fact that I could order the car exactly the way I wanted it
The fact that leather is NOT the only choice, as it is in many luxury cars
The level of electronics and the ease of use (Audio/NAV/iPod integration) and the fact that there is no magic **** to manage everything (BMW idrive)
The ability to mod the car as far as I want to with lots of OEM and sponsor sources
So far there is nothing that I don't like

If you have to ask...
A 911 is all about a compact, lithe, short-wheel-based all-in-the-rear coupe. When i hear it needs more power, larger back seats, turn-signal lever is not refined, sound system concerns, tough to get in/out, and so on... those people should be looking for another car.

I hate the lack of luggage space in my '07 C4S. Front trunk is useless, esp. since car has 6 CD player and NAV which further impinge into the already sparse trunk space in a C4. Inside space isn't that great either esp. since my car has BOSE which further impinges on rear seat luggage space because of the added rear speakers above rear seats. Next car will be a C2 and with NO BOSE. One other gripe: luggage bounces all over the place when placed on rear shelf and there are no tie down straps to secure luggage. Geez, my old Boxster S had a more user friendly luggage format. I'm actually beginning to regret the switch to 997.....................

Adias - A bit extreme to say that because there are things owners don't like they should be looking for another car. Fact is...we all knew the "dislikes" before purchasing but did it anyway. If there was a more perfect car, we would all be on another forum. Would be interesting though if Porsche engineering could hear this type of feedback as many of the dislikes could be addressed in future models. Just my take...

Fact is, with every level you move up.... so does your expectations.

Except that expectations should be placed right. You should aspire for a superior chassis control, suspension, engine flexibility and driving dynamics. You should not damp useless crap on top and ruin the car. If you care for that get a GT - SL, Lexus, etc.

The core values might have remained with an air cooled engine , simple ***** rather than high tech gadgets , offset pedals , and a price under 60K. They didn't just change the engine to compete with the market --the rest of the car evolved too .

Yes, but there are limits for the slippery slope. And some think the last 911 was the 993...

I get that and agree. I was referring to the class of cars; such as, moving from Honda to BMW to Porsche to Ferrari, etc. The expectation I would have from a Honda S2000 cab top to a M3 cab top to a 997 cab top is that... it wouldn't squeak the more expensive the car is.

Turn ons:
Possibly the best steering feel I've ever experienced
The creamy yet precise clutch and shifter
The pull of the car in second and third
Superb braking that can be perfectly modulated
A perfect driving position - upright, great vis and sight lines (well, not with the cab top up)
A beautiful shape - I always smile when I see it
Great seat heaters - perfect for those 42 degree days with the top down
The plentiful mods available for the car, and a great community to help to figure them out.
A great exhaust note - after new headers, cats, mufflers and intake
And the grin on my face from beginning to end of each drive. Fast or slow, in town or the twisties, it's the best car I've ever owned.
Turn offs:
It could afford to shed 400-500 lbs. Really.
The redline is just too low. The thought of the new 458 rev'ing to 9k makes me dream
The base radio is fine, but the nav is really terrible. And it's not a luxury to me. I can get lost exiting my garage
No bluetooth pre 997.2
The baseline seats are really sub-par
The stock exhaust note is Honda-esque (lawnmower, not NSX)
I've never had a Porsche with strong enough seat-belt retractor springs. Porsche folks - this is an easy one to fix...
Many rattles. I'm a stickler for a well put-together machine and it's troubling
Oh and of course... Not enough alcantara!

I see that you put an F-car higher in your pecking order... I disagree. Do you think an F-car is rattle free? You are up for a huge disappointment.

It's progress and in this case even you and I both bought PDK cars rather than opting for no frills basic . Times have changed too --not just the car . In the "good old days" porsche never had to deal with xenon light theft or 4 door heavy M5's and AMG's offering equal speed and living room style comfort . Things were easier --back then .
I believe that if they build the best car they can and price it right .. it will sell . I also believe that they ought to consider owner feedback --even if it's someone buying his first Porsche . New ideas can offer growth .

They have to select a path and it's either traditional , modern, or the mid point . It looks like they selected the middle and what that does is send the purists longing for the 993 and the modern owner wanting (paraphrasing) "more, better, faster" . Slap a price of nearly double the 993 and they are grabbing for the modern owner and at those prices they have to step up.

You and I are in for the current offering. But will we bite for the next one? Living rooms on wheels are not for me. In fact, living rooms on wheels are destroying driving, clogging roads and causing accidents - people do not drive any more - they tend to everything except driving - a tragedy really.
