The point I am trying to make is that some of us - the core 911 fans I call it - actually like its handling and do not find it at fault. I like the Cayman/Boxster and know how balanced it is but I still prefer the 911 handling. I do prefer its pendulum dynamic - and the 997 has that very tamed. And BTW... as balanced as a mid-engine can be, it has its limits, and when those are reached... all bets are off.

What I hear is that some people have the 911 for its image/looks despite considering it less good handling-wise. I think it would be more honest to come out and say that they do not like the 911 dynamics but they like its looks/image.
The one thing that people are forgetting, the mid engine design of the 986/987 does create better balance, however the rear engine set up of the 911 allows for much quicker acceleration out of the corners. This allows them to get away with a 355hp car that can compete with cars that have a lot more power. To drive a 911 fast, the first rule you need to know is slow in, fast out. The exit speed of these cars is amazing and I have kept up with cars that are much faster then mine by knowing how to use its "weekness" to my advantage. As a few that have said, as well as what Porsche knows those that learn to drive these cars well, don't feel that there is a problem.

I am sure that Porsche will continue to lighten the engine, and move things towards the front and middle to get a bit more balance to the future models. The 2010 model is the 46th year of the 911 variant, and I am willing to bet that it will be the last model that VW will mess around with. It is overpriced compared to other cars in it's class, but there is no need to lower the price as they are selling (or were) in record amounts making about $30,000 profit on every car that they made, the also make a killing on the exclusive options, but Porsche was smart, the aftermarket car parts business is worth $4 billion a year in the US alone, this is there way of getting a piece of the action.

I love my Porsche 997, it is still very unique IMO, I have worked the car harder on the track then it should be worked and still can't seem to break anything, and the end of the day it is so much fun to drive.

I guess that I'm only one on the forum that wish there was a spare tire available system. I love the car and look forward to driving but am somewhat hesitant to travel long distances because of lack of spare. I would hate to have to have my car towed to a town and spend several days awaiting new tires. Other than that the car is perfect even with the traditional left sided ignition!

+1 couldn't agree more. Loud is form over function.

Lets start with things your like about your Porsche and things you may not be happy with. Sorry, I can't start it as I don't own one yet
Likes: everything. Dream car for me, will not change it for anything.

Dislikes are quite specific.

Numero Uno - different rattles, most if not all of them are fixable but still, it takes time.

2 - many essential nice functions are buried into options that seem non-important - like that function to flip down right mirror in reverse will work ONLY if you have heavy electronically controlled seats. WTF? Presence of ugly sport chrono clock controls ability to engage sport throttle control - WTF? Does not honk when you lock doors, just blinks (but may be changed by PIWIS) Etc. It is nice to have options, but they overdid it with this car.

3 - quality of PCM controls *****. PCM system and audio by itself is so-so, but anyone can upgrade speakers/amplifiers into top notch grade if one got enough money - ***** are not 'upgradable' and they get chipped very easy. Major PITA. Also, only reaction may be - WTF, why? Somebody overlooked what grade of plastic coating was used on ***** in $100K car? Idiots.

4 - exterior paint. I have strong feeling after 2-3 years of a city driving I will have to repaint entire car even considering I have full front bra on her. Paint chips really easily compared to Lexus paint that was nearly non-destroyable compared to Porsche. Or is it an european thing now with this paint?

Some other stuff i have grudge against is probably not that important.

I also read more than once that all that stuff is actually configurable somehow. not no one seems to know for sure how to do all that - make it make sound when locked, assign actions to sunroof buttons, make passenger window closing not from middle section, etc.

yes - I forgot about this. Another purely idiotic WTF thing about this car - if they got damn sun sensor installed right there in the middle of front panel, why, WHY this sensor does not turn on headlights like in all other cars? I think it was also design overlook, someone did think of the sensor but someone else forgot to put circuits for this function. Quite inconvenient when you have to drive through tunnels often.

What quite pisses me off is the fact that this mod you speaking about does pretty much nothing by itself - it is just an additional control interface that communicates with standard ECU. It got no brains, it`s just a remote key extender.

That efficiently means that standard ECU CAN do all that stuff based on your key remote as well. mods4cars unit just knows what command to transmit. I am pretty ***-tight to pay for something I know can be done with simple reprograming. It GOT to be doable somehow.

And I have one more very specific grudge against 911 - I DO believe base of throttle pedal is located about 1 - 1.3 inches too deep. If it would be pushed just an inch ahead it would make heel-to-toe much easier.

I am sure that you are right on some of the "options" that it has, but for the $300 and the 1/2 hour to install, it is easier to do this then to try and pay the dealer to play around with the PIWIS.

This is an easy mod, and I use it only for the one touch window and beeping on lock and unlock. My car came with ***, so the reverse is there when I want it. The rest of the stuff doesn't matter to me, so I left it off.

I also consider it, actually, for mirrors flop function alone. I really need it, it is PITA to parallel park this car, I am always afraid I will damage my rims. I got cheapest nice ones specifically because of this as I knew it was inevitable with city curb parking, but still cannot overcome this 'new car syndrome'.

If I only knew how it could be done with PIWIS I would do it at my local indi shop - they have PIWIS in-house, bit have no idea how to access all those custom functions.

For $300 you won't need to bother. This little mod is the worth it, just plug it in and forget about it.

Absolutely - I have their smart top product and it's fantastic. It arguably provides features that really ought to have been standard, but it works really well and it does make life a lot easier.
