You should have no trouble going straight on the summer tires. Of course, getting going, turning, or stopping are another story!
Don't do it...it is not fun, not safe, and not good for your tires. And just because there is no snow on the ground, it does not mean it's ok to be out on summer rubber.

But only a yes because I live in Vegas and while the temperature goes below 40 a night, it is bone dry and daytime is in the mid 50s at least,


Any other climate I believe it would be foolish not to have winter tires:

1. it does not really cost you that much extra because your summer tires will last you longer in terms of regular wear and tear
2. Snow and Ice is not the main factor, but the softer rubber mixture results in much better grip of the winter tires when it is cold, thus your breaking improves dramatically and thus you add a ton of safety (Summer Performance tires get awfully hard in cold temperature and grip is terrible)
3. Having a second set of tires helps your resale value
4. you could use the second set of rims for racing tires in the summer

I think the only alternative to winter tires are:

 

unless you have other cars and can keep it for warmer and dry days, you should most definaetly get winter tires. High performance tires are not like all season tires. All seasons remain soft enough to drive in weather around -10C while high performance summer tires are no good below 7C and useless below 0C.
