Smile Winter is coming, be honest.

How many of you guys will stay with your summer tire set through the winter?
The reason why I ask is because I got different suggestion. Even the salesman told me it is not necessary. I am in NJ so the really cold time probably is from now till mid or end March. Beside the extra dollars I have to spend, I have to find space for storage and time to change the tire. If I don't have to, I rather not. Of course I believe it is sure better with the winter tire for the winter.
SCal and Florida members are welcome.

My winter tires are already on. I continue to maintain that the only cost is some depreciation of the winter wheels, which is offset by less winter wear on the summer set. Tire costs are proving to be less since I'm getting more miles out of the winter set than the summer.
Even if it did cost more, it is a trivial cost compared to staying in control of the car. And I do drive my car every day (unless the snow is too deep!).

Put it this way: Immediately after your first accident you will change your tires. So why not doing it before?

I leave my PS2's on, but I only drive it when the weather is 7C (45F) or above. Otherwise I take the Touareg. If it is your only car, I would say get the winter tires, it is worth the investment, especially since your car is new.

I suggest you contact Damon@tirerack.com he is a forum sponsor and will set you up with everything you need.

No no no, price is not a issue here. Just lazy, and necessity.

Tks. Seriously, it's amazing what 4 proper winter tires can do, even on a 2WD. You let some many SUVs behind, or simply stuck. Some guys with huge trucks don't understand that large wheels are actually a downside on snow and that 4 wheels with no grip still slide.

I think it would all depend if my car was a DD or not. If it was a DD, no brainer and I would change out my tires (even with my car being AWD). However, since my car is strictly for weekend fun, no switch for me and I'll only be taking her out when the temps are above 45.

Winter tires are an absolute requirement in cold climates.

Sort of like skiing with dull edges. No fun, and dangerous to boot.

Got mine on for 2 weeks and I wouldn't never consider driving in snow with the summer tires. And don't forget the "black ice" on the road

If you plan to use the car at all in the snow I would definitely get winter tires. I ccan remember a few years ago, when I was driving on I-287 with some wet snow on the surface. Between Morristown and Bridgewater ( 15 minute span) I saw two BMWs and one Boxster off the road and in the grass or trees ( all unrelated / different locations). These cars presumably had theri summer sport tires on and simply lost control while cruising straight down the highway.

Not to answer for buckwheat, but when I had my X5, I didn't change out my tires to winter tires as the OEM's were all-season tires and handled the cold, snow, and rain pretty well (as well as the X5 being AWD). The tires that come on our 997's are not all-season and are pretty poor in the cold, rain, and for sure not with any snow on the ground.

Just my two cents.
