I'm going to add a twist to this thread that no one has mentioned yet. One of the reasons that 993's are so sought after is that its successor, the 996 is viewed by many to be one of the least handsome of the 911 series. It also happens to be the last of the air-cooled engines but that's another story.

So what if the 998/991 is viewed by Porsche fans as being not-so-handsome? Wouldn't that mean 997 prices would hold their value or possibly even rise slightly and that the 997 achieves the same legendary status that the 993 has now? If so then all the 997 owner has to do is hold onto their car until the 999 (or maybe 992?) comes to market in 2019 or so. If you time it right and sell your car privately you might be able to cover 70-80% of the cost when you are ready for your 999.

Always a possibility but the likelihood that Porsche will make that big of a mistake again is pretty slim. Like any "investment" in a car, the chance of appreciation, or even stabilization of value, is a longshot. The best reason to buy a car is to drive it and enjoy it. And the less it is treated as a shrine in anticipation of retained value, the more it will be enjoyed. That being said, I will be thrilled if you are correct in your hypothesis!

Bought a new 993 in 1995 and this was better than sliced bread with its 270+ HP.

Then the 996s came out and I bought a Cab, I was in heaven with this car, 320 HP. I loved it and vowed this was it.

Then the 997 TT came out and this is the cats meow.

I think its human nature to like what you have and then move on to other experiences.

So most likely I will upgrade my turbo when my buttons are once again pushed.
