CPO or No CPO?

I am looking at a few 08s that still have about 3 years of warranty. The dealer can CPO it for $2700.......is it worth getting the CPO for an additional 2 years of warranty?

For comparison, how much is a similar aftermarket warranty?

Thanks

Pat

Negotiate!! Tell the dealer you will buy the car if it is CPO and it is included in the price. The market is very soft for these cars. However not only do you get the 2 years, but you also get 100,000 miles. The 08 still has the IMS. Maybe spit it with the dealer.

Depends on how long you intend on keeping the car. If you are in and out of cars every 1-3 years, don't pay extra for the CPO, esp if you just end up usually trading back in at the dealer because in that situation the CPO is not transferable- it can only be transferred in a private party transaction. If you plan on keeping the car for 5 or more years- then CPO is probably a no brainer- pretty much anything that can go wrong with the car will cost more than $2K-

I like the idea of CPO but not at $2700.

An 08 shouldn't need that much fo rthe CPO..get them to lower the price and go for it.

If you are buying the car from a dealership .. you must CPO it . You can crunch those numbers any way you'd like but the CPO is the ONLY reason to buy a used car from a dealership . Otherwise .. to save money it's a matter of finding the right car from a previous owner who took care of it --keeping it in ideal shape .

Yes to CPO - had it on the 2 used Porsche I bought in the past, would do again. No to the outrageous quote of $2700. If I recall correctly, on both the 997 GT3 and the Boxster S, the cost was $995 for the dealer charge to Porsche and maybe $200 for the inspection process (which should have already been done by the dealer).

thanks for all the input. I just spoke to the dealer and they are pretty firm on their CPO price and on the asking price of the car saying there is not much bargaining with the price. They said that the price to CPO was $2700 and the dealer cost to have it CPO was $2400.

Anyone else had any recent stories on how much their dealer charged to CPO? I am thinking of putting in an offer and the more info I have the better.

Thanks

Try a search here and at RennList, on something like "cost for cpo" in the 997 forums. Might find some recent posts from others that just had it done. I can't imagine the price has changed that much in 12 months and 24 months ago the CPO on the 997 GT3 I picked up was only the same $1200 (plus or minus a few bucks, I don't really remember).

I have CPO'd my last two cars ('05 CS and '06 CS). It is my recollection that both dealers said the cost for the warranty thru PCNA was around $2000. That was 6 to 8 months ago so it could be mid $2000 by now. The earlier reply was good advice. You have warranty thru 2012 so if you plan on keeping the car past that, the CPO is the way to go. If not, don't spend the money.

This all sounded "off" to me, so I dug up the old files... $995 was the cost 2 years ago when I purchased the GT3, and it was $1750 12 months ago (almost to the day) to do the Boxster S. This from my dealer:

The CPO warranty is about $1,750 to register.

I had forgotten it went up in a year, but I can't believe it went up again and by so much! Maybe in his number is a bunch of "inspection" and replacement of wear items (tires, brake pads, belts, hoses, fluids, filters, etc.)?

I suggest just playing hardball on the price of the car. No sense in paying a premium on price plus a CPO premium. Remember, the dealer didn't pay more than KBB trade-in value, so work off that price to get to a reasonable offer, then add the CPO to that. Otherwise, keep looking.

It may cost < $2000 for for the dealer to "register" the CPO to Porsche but there's probably some added costs for reconditioning the car / inspection / etc-

Fang911 has a good point. A CPO car has to meet certain standards. The '06 I have had a brake flush, oil change and 4 new tires to get certified. Your '08 might not need much, but it will come to you with all service up to date.

Get the CPO but negotiate the price. even if don't keep the car that long, it will help with the private party resale.

I just CPO'ed an 06 with 6K miles for $2200.
