I decided to get the new Escort Qi45 with the laser shifter. I spoke to them today and they sold me on it. Its based on the newest 8500x50 unit and the new zr4 shifters. Looks like winning package. Plus they gave me 20% the shifters, free shipping and $80 trade in on a old radar detector. (Ive got a really old detector Im going to send in). I will post photos once installed. Cant wait.

Finally installed. I had Al & Eds in Sherman Oaks install the unit. I didnt want to mess with taking the front bumper off. Came out really nice. Radar detector unit is under bumper in the center. Im waiting for a photo from the installer for that unit. I really havent driven to far yet to test. Im really impressed by the quality of the unit. Escort did a good job. Here are some photos.

Don't know if you can trust so called unbiased reviews, but I recently read such a review of the Passport 9500ci , www.radartest.com/article_2.asp?articleid=100584, and they rated it the highest of any detector they reviewed, which is pretty much all of them. If nothing else the site is worth reading before you purchase any new detector. Lot's of good info regarding radar detectors and their use. No association with them, was researching detectors and found while doing a search.

Having only used the Valentine One for the past 12 years I haven't tried the Qi45, but despite the V1's somewhat dated size and feature set I just can't imagine not having the arrows. They have saved me more times than I can remember when I thought that I was clear of a threat and another was lurking ahead. I also get very few false alerts on the current version, but then I drive on more rural areas than many here probably do.
The easy solution to having to swap b/w vehicles is to simply buy a V1 for each car. I own three of them. My oldest is 12 years old and was just sent in for the latest updates which is, admittedly, almost as expensive as buying a new unit, but since the original still looks new and will be returned with all new internals I figured that was the most cost effective way to go.
I can definitely see the huge advantage of having a more stealthy unit in a cab. I just saw a convertible Mercedes a few days ago that had duct tape over a 3' slice in the roof right above the rearview mirror area. There were suction cup marks beside the mirror and an empty GPS cradle still attached to the windshield. That kind of thing doesn't happen very often in my area, but it would make me nervous having expensive electronics in plain view in any convertible. The cost of replacing the top must be astronomical. I imagine that combining the insurance deductible with the replacement of the units stolen would be close to $1500.00.
Not too mention the shock of walking up to your cab to find the roof sliced. That would be a real drag!
Let us know how the unit you installed works out. Looks like a great choice.

What am I missing. I can't see anything different in your first install post in the shot of the instrument cluster?
What did the install labor run you? And finally, do you have rear coverage with this unit? Is there a receiver installed under the rear bumper as well?
Thanks.

I have been thinking of getting a radar/ laser jammer system installed in my car, but am worried because they are illegal in Ontario...and don't want some cop towing my car because he suspects a radar system.
Are radar systems legal in all states in the U.S?? Are there systems out there that I can install without any worries of getting caught??

radar jammers are illegal in the US but in almost all states laser jammers are legal...radar isnt used much in most states so many radar jammers lose their function/purpose...laser detectors are worthless because if your alarm goes off, its too late they have you ....so laser jammers appear to be the only reasonable mode of protection for most people in most states...guesss there are some areas which primarily use radar rather than laser but this is becoming more and more infrequent...this is what I have learned with my research.

"radar isn't used much in most states..." I see a lot more radar than laser in MI, OH, IN, IL and other surrounding states. It is definitely used quite a bit - and is part of the speed cameras where they exist.
"Laser detectors are worthless..." True only if you're the target - if you get a reading from a car in front being targeted, you get some benefit. But you'd better be fast slowing down because you're next!
I have a V1 and no laser jammers and do just fine - but I know if I get pulled over the officer isn't going to like seeing that V1 on my windshield and he certainly wouldn't like seeing laser jammers in the grille. When they are really stealthy (integrated in the LED lights), then I'm interested.

Can't help you with the pics since I don't know either, but I think you're a wee bit off on the laser radar comments:

If the officer points the laser at your front plate, you got a chance. If he points it at your headlight you're screwed because the shifter will not help you unless it a direct or near direct hit on the shifter. They are certain to get a reading from the headlight and it only takes .45 seconds to get it. The only real benefit to any detector is long distance on K Ka, and some times X bands, and in a crowd of cars you're not leading. If you're the target chances are you'll get clocked no matter what you've got for protection.
