997.1 Carrera S 3.8 vs 997.2 Carrera 3.6 PDK?
My friend is looking at either a 07/08 C2S manual or for the same money he can get a 09 C2 with PDK. The 997.1 S has a bigger engine but only 10 more hp than the base 997.2. PDK is nice for stop and go traffic and has faster gear changes but might not be a fun as a manual on the track.
In your opinion, which is better as a track car? And which is the better daily driver?
997.1 Carrea S 3.8 M/T
0-60 mph: 4.6 sec
997.2 Carrera 3.6 PDK

997.1 Carrea S 3.8 M/T
Power: 355 HP @ 6,600 rpm; 295 ft lb , 400 Nm @ 4,600 rpm
0-60 mph: 4.6 sec
Top Speed: 182 mph
997.2 Carrera 3.6 PDK
Power: 345 HP @ 6,500 rpm; 288 ft lb , 390 Nm @ 4,400 rpm

On other side of things - it probably would make sense to check out both and figure out for yourself what is it in the 911 car you`re after. Forum info is great but it rarely does anything else than supporting never ending flame of modding lust. Any 997 car, .1 or .2 are exceptionally good vehicles.

997.2 has way better electronics, it has PDK which will be great for both DD and track. And it is newer and better car. '09 C2 or C2S PDK with SC option would be better choice over any 997.1.

The budget is a bit tight for a 997.2 C2S, but much more comfortable with either a 997.1 C2S or a base 997.2. I agree ultimately its his personal preference that would help him decide on the car in the end. But I just thought it'd interesting to see what most 6speeders here would do in his situation? For the same money, would you take an old "S" or a new base model?
If he is up to a new car I think he would be better searching a lot across country and get 997.2 PDK C2S. I just think it is not a good idea to get 'second good' item if you get new car which will not be taken apart any time soon - you will need to enjoy it the way it is. Still, it mostly depends of a person - if he just need a 911 brand car and has no interest in autosport activities - then base DFI C2 engine will be more than adequate power wise, stock C2 brakes are also more then adequate for street driving - so, it sort of makes no sense to overpay for those 'S' features.
On the same note I vote for 997.2 based on interior and exterior upgrades - it is quite a better car inside and out. If person is ready to commit to take this depreciation hit - it is definitely worth to get best new vehicle you can afford. I did not want to buy new car from a general principle perception, 3 year old one has much better value/fun ratio to me. But it`s me. Other people may have different goals.

Just a little correction, the official timing of 997.1 C2S 0-60 mph is 4.6
The only possible problem with the 09s is that there is a complete new engine in the car, I have heard (or read actually on the forum) is that some cars end up having problems with the injectors failing sometimes. They are of course covered in the warranty
PDK is a nice transmission for traffic and track, but I think manual is more traditional and fun

And I am positive I will never be able to shift that fast when you hit gas to the floor and rocket car forward. I always mess up 1st to second gear shift, and PDK does it in second fraction speed.
Still, to spend more than twice as much for '09 car with good options than for my '06 car - well, I do not like that idea at all. But to each his own.

In actual tests the 997.1S has done 0-60 in 3.9 in a Road and Track article and to 4.1 sec. for the rest of the mags. I think it would be a drivers race...Car and Driver ran a 4.1 to 60 in the 997.2 PDK (nonS) pretty much equaling what they ran in a 997.1S.
Road and Track ran a 12.3 @ 114.8mph in a 997.1S, Car and Driver ran a 12.5 in the 997.2 (nonS) but different day, different track. I do believe it would be a drivers race.
In a 997.1 Car and Driver ran 0-60 in 4.3 sec. far better than the 4.8 that Porsche rated the car and it broke into the 12's with a 12.8 @ 109mph.
Porsche numbers are always conservative, in the case of the 997.2 though I think alot of it is marketing as the actual difference isn't that great. Some guy on a Mustang Forum took his 997.2S to the track at Atco Raceway and with killer air ran a 12.0@118 mph!!! He was going to post up the video and when he does I will post it up.

Arerrac911,
Your freind needs to test drive a few models before he buys the wrong car.
I would advise him on determining first if he is going to prefer PDK or Manual. If he doesn't have any real driving experience in 911's, then he needs to figure this out first.
Only then should he really get into horsepower, year model, and performance package questions. Good luck with the purchase.
BTW - When can we see a picture of your new car?

I would be a bad adviser in this area as I am slowly building up my car from base 997 C2 up to my taste.

The 997.1s may also have problems with the intermediate shaft. I guess at least the newer models will have warranty.
