The currency crisis should come within 2-3 yrs imho.

Yeah buying a Porsche and making minimum payments and putting rest of money into physical gold and when gold goes parabolic a few yrs from now you can pay back your loan with devalued dollars...you would be getting the car for maybe 1/2 off.

But by then dont worry about your car, you will think only 3 things, safety(guns), gold and food/water....
"Buying gold" as crisis protection method only works if you buy actual metal, not any sort of printed paper with word 'gold' on it, as any paper always costs exactly as much as paint used to draw words on it.
Buying actual metal is problematic and cumbersome. And difficult to store.

So, most likely, no one will follow those advices, even if they are perfectly logical.

From the quotes Im seeing on here I bet 80% on here dont know who Ayn Rand is and 95% havent read Atlas Shrugged.

If they did, they would know the indirect connection between where you park your Porsche and its relationship to the Federal Reserve...I find it sad and funny that 95% of society has no idea the forces that control societal trends, beliefs and fears...yes there is rationale for "you worked hard and you deserve it so drive like you stole it" mentality but life is more complicated than that...you will see this in a few yrs.

Just know I sold all my real estate holdings in late 06'...I sold all my stocks in late 07'...told everyone I knew to buy physical gold at that time...wanna practical tip now...this stock mkt rally right now is a gift to the sheeple...watch what happens in Jan hehe...while avg Joe just getting the courage to pile back in now insiders exiting as we speak...wonder why?...people, you will see things within the next 2 yrs you couldnt even imagine just a short while ago...Ayn Rand was a genius.

phase 1. crebit/debt crisis

phase 2. sovereign/state currency/debt crisis.

People dont realize that the elites are wallstreet, the govt and the media and the education system....and they are perplexed that govt would give 99% of the bailout funds to the banks and 1% to the people and expect a true economic recovery...people actually think we have political choice when the candidates are already chosen for us yrs in advance...people have no idea that the true current unemployment rate is very similar to what it was during the great depression.

But what I find the most amusing is this, the ones who laugh and call "us" crazy conspiracy theorists are always the ones who seem to know everything yet they have never done a single minute of DD on any of the subjects.

As you can tell, Im not your typical MB member...I cannot stand our current(republican and democrats alike) fascist/socialist govt yet right now Im looking to buy some turbo wheels for my C4S...oh the dichotomy of life!....

And btw, I fully realize 90% of this MB will curse my name...people that think outside the box always get cursed...yeah thats right, I still believe that there is a relationship between the Fed's and where you park...think about it.

oh really, then why is there 2 month wait to get 1 oz gold coins ?...why did the IMF just sell 200 tons of gold and the Indian govt bought entire lot...Chinese govt is buying physical gold right now in clandestine way...have you been inside coin shop lately?...why is it hard to store...safety deposit box?...home safe?.

I agree never buy paper gold(ie-GLD etf) as there is no way they have to gold to back up the paper...have to buy physical gold coins.

But I agree that nobody will listen to this type of advice...heard mentality is hard to resist...human nature.

Buy tech stocks, buy real estate, buy gold,...pattern? Right, time will tell.

Gold seems arbitrarily valued though. Other than it's use in manufactured items, there seems to be a lot more of it around than is necessary to fulfill that need. The value of gold is also a product of human nature - no other animal on the planet values it at all. Well, maybe a crow will grab a bit and hide it away as a shiny object - whether crows have a preference for the real thing over faux plastic, I don't know. Dump the gold soon and go into Quetzal feathers - that's the next big thing - best prices come before 2012.

How did this turn into a conspiracy theory thread? Even if there were a government conspiracy, we couldn't do anything about it. I mean what should we do, go out in the street and wave our fists? We can't fight the damn government and it's military. We all know it's a racket anyway.
Besides, many of the members on this board are part of the top 5% percent of wage earners, so I guess we are willing participants in this conspiracy? Damn, some of you guys take things way too seriously. Just get in your car and go for a ride: You'll feel better.

I haven't read this entire thread, but I would think that my situation is fairly unique. I work at a food bank. For years I chased the corporate dream, caught it (10 years as CFO of a $1B company), and now I'm trying to "give back". [BTW: this is the best job I have ever had.] So...parking my C2S at work is wrong in so many ways - from the risk of getting keyed to flaunting excess in the face of our recipients who can't afford to feed their families. I drive a late model Jeep Wrangler to fly under the radar.

I have quite a bit of ETFs (silver, too. Silver is rising as well)... Then again, I am riding the wave, playing the game and waiting to sell as I have already made quite a bit.

Price on krugerrands is overinflated now and IMHO is not worth wasting money for. At least I do not know of place were you could buy it legally for reasonable price close to current gold quotes.

............. "You drive that to work?!?!"

I try to stay low key - I don't flaunt it and I'm not a flashy person, but the car does stand out a bit. I'm not worried about my car getting keyed or anything like that.........but I need to preserve the intangibles that affect the professional relationships - especially with the folks I DON'T intimately know at work. Any insight on owner-psychology or how people handle this is appreciated.
Have no choice. It's either that or take the bus. You really can't control what people say or think. I find people will think what they want anyway even if the evidence is contrary to the facts. Just the world we live in.

I do it every day. The only reactions I've gotten have been positive. There are a host of reasons for people to not own a Porsche, and many are not financial (kids, bad back, need storage space, etc.). Don't assume people will begrudge you because you have an expensive car. People universally have said to me some variant of "I used to own one" or "I have always wanted to own one." People who are going to begrudge you will do it anyway, just based on something else. Most people just love the sight of the thing which often triggers some response or memory.

RickinColorado--

I am very envious of you. As CFO for 10 years of a billion dollar company, you clearly have enough money put away to be set for life. Thus, you have the opportunity to work in the food bank, not having to worry about income.

I have talked with others who are well-off and retired executives, and every one of them said that if you're considering a second career or part-time work, try to work for a NON-PROFIT entity. The rewards of this are immense, a completely different sense of values and basic decency when making money is NOT the primary objective.

That's funny. I work at a Fortune 50 company, and I've noticed that the VP's drive very ordinary cars to work, but if you spot them during the weekend, they are generally driving exotic cars. One of them drives a clunker 1970's Mercedes to work but sports a red C2 Cab during the weekends. I know which spots are the largest at my work (usually the last in a row, or next to a handicap spot), and I will only park in those. When I used to drive a MB SL500, someone once side swiped it in the parking lot at work, probably while pulling out next to me ($5K in damage), so I'm always extra cautious now.
