C4S "snaps" once I move in the cold - normal?

I've noticed this in mildly-cold weather as well, but certainly more evident in COLD weather: When I try to move my car from its parking spot/position, ie when I move it the first few feet, I feel a little bit of resistance to moving and then a loud "bang" or snapping sound from the AWD system, not sure exactly where in it, underneath me.

Obviously something is partially seizing up due to the low temps, and was wondering if this is normal...

Sounds like your brakes. Mine does the same things after I wash it and leave it sit for a day or two.

Yea don't worry about it, happened to me a few times. Brakes seize up and don't feel like letting go cuz it's too cold. Once it was so bad one of my rear wheels didn't turn for a good 10 feet, brake was fully locked up. Guy at the gas station gave me a funny look
hahaha

Hmm I wouldnt have thought it was the brakes. It sure sounded like it was coming from underneath the car somewhere towards the center, that's why I thought it was one of the diffs / axles.

Ok good to know. Thanks guys. Reflux LOL that's .

That's so funny, I was wondering what the hell is wrong with my car, everytime after I get it washed, by this service while am at work, when I start the car, and drive that loud bang noise! Is this affect the brakes/car in a negative way?? I have never had this issue on any of my cars!!??

Do winter drivers experience this all the time?

When I picked up my car this morning, it made the "snapping / bang sound" you describe. I immediately thought back to this thread. (The dealer had given my car a courtesy bath, then parked it overnight in the 5 deg F cold. ) I drove it slowly for a few minutes to test the breaks. It was definitely grabbing a little at first.

So..is this b/c the pads freeze to the wheels? or is something else is happening? Is this harmful to the car? In other cars, I've felt/heard what I thought were the tires getting unstuck from the icy asphalt, but I've never heard a car make a noise quite like that.

I agree, it sounds like your brakes. Usually happens if I wash the car and then park it for a couple of days.

for me ..it was definitely water related..and ive been told by the board members it was the result of rusting in the brakes.

i also know it is water because when it rains..the next day i drive off and it happens.

when it does not rain or i do not wash the car ...NEVER a problem the next day.

Talked to the service dept...they also said it was the water acting on the brakes (i didnt ask them if it was the brakes ... but they said right away it was the brakes...so now i have two sources with the same independent conclusion)

I think there are two noises.

One is when you drive off and I notice it on a regular basis when it's cold. I too believe it is the brakes.

The other is when I back out of a parking spot and lock the sheen left or right. I get a distinct clunk sound from the front end. Have no idea what this could be as it happens in any and all climates.

i second that. i think that there are 2 noises. when i pull out of my parking space and turn the wheel, i hear a "clunking" sound. since it's not reproducible, the dealer couldn't fix it. i live in socal so it doesn't get too cold here....

The service advisor at my dealer suggested that it was because a 997 doesn't have rubber stops at the end. I tried to explain that it wasn't when hitting lock but rather after a foot or two backing up while at full luck.

He didn't understand and couldn't find the problem either. It happens in both directions and only when in reverse.
