Battery Chargers

Has anyone had success with the cigarette lighter batter chargers?

I'll be away from my car for a couple weeks at a time and I'm wondering if these work? Any potential damage for long term usage.

Happy Holidays.

I use my trickle charger when I let my car sit for a week or more. There are a few threads on this, if you search.

If you let your car sit too long too many times....your battery will weaken faster or drain entirely. If your battery dies, it is a real @#$ pain in the tush getting back into your car. ( Check the manual on getting access to a dead battery. )

I'm keeping my car running through the winter, but will not be driving it for a few weeks at a time. I run the trickle charger's wire through the window. The window fully shuts on the wire. I then arm/lock the car.

I don't think you can really damager the battery if you leave the charger plugged in for extended periods (e.g. month at a time or whatever) long. Most trickle chargers have a chip which periodically shuts off the juice. It only trickles when needed.

Definitely buy one. You never know when you won't be driving for awhile.

I never let my car sit for more than a week without it being connected- especially in cold weather. I also run the wire through the window. I try to make sure it clamps in a differnet spot each time. It pinches the wire a bit.

There are also some pretty interesting trickle connections. (Some people have run a quick connect through the boot into the wheel well or front grille. I don't think that is necessary.

There are a series of other things you might want to do to winterize/store your car if you are letting it sit longer than a month or so. (-overinflate tires, tire cradles, battery removal, car cover, cups over your exaust, sacrafice a chicken on the hood.)

On most cars, power to the cigarette lighter plug is cut off if key is removed.

Are you still able to charge through it?

Yes. Porsche and MB have no such cut-off.
