Engine Failure

If you have an extended warranty you should be covered. This was a mistake by Porsche on the 04 and the new 05 engines. I believe you could get the IMS replaced before the damages happen. Check with your Porsche dealer. Also, I believe Porsche will pay for the replacement.

Does anyone know how you can approach a dealer and tell them to replace the IMS for little or no cost? I have an '04 996 and warranty has expired. I tried purchasing an aftermarket warranty, but haven't found one that is willing to sign me up.

Sorry to hear about your car. As long as you are a good customer Porsche will take care of you. I purchase my car from a private seller a year ago and my car wasn't CPO and they replaced the engine. I think they will do the right thing to you. So is the dealer waiting on Porsche to decide yes or no? I just got my car back on Wednesday with the new engine. It took about 3 weeks for them to decide to replace the engine and one day to put the new engine in and $3k later I have a brand new Porsche 911. (Well engine wise) It does drive great so far. Very smooth!!! I am a little afraid to push it. The good thing about the new engine is Porsche will warranty the engine for two years.
Well, good luck and please keep us informed.

I've been doing some research on this issue just out of curiosity and (correct me if I'm wrong) but it seems that it's actually the bearing that fails, not the shaft itself. Evidently once this happens the whole engine needs to be replaced. Having one of the new DFI engines in my own car I can't help but wonder if these will develop some kind of major issue.

It is the shaft that cracks and then the bears fall out into the engine and all the engine oil pours out. I have pictures of the shaft and where it broke and the bears all eaten up from jumping around the engine, but for some reason I can up load them. The bearing noise sounded like my muffler fell out and I was dragging it. Bad feeling!!!

Now I'm getting worried..I have an 05 Carrera with 9K on the clock(still under GEICO extended warranty til 2012) and an 05 Boxster with 34K (best of luck on that one)
..plus a 930s. Perhaps they'll goodwill me with 3 Porsches (and monkeys will fly out of my butt)

I actually would be more worried about the carrera...i believe too few mles is worse than more miles for these engines.
get out and drive and enjoy....and don't worry...you have a great stable of cars.

I only drive the Carrera about twice a week..of course weather permitting. Still, few miles on her are due to "rotation" of many vehicles. Never to work or shopping..only spirited driving on days like today in South Florida (Sunny with weather in the 60s..PERFECT..) then.... out came the Slantnose !!!!

Does your Carrera melt/dissolve when it rains? Mine drives beautifully.
