Is there any single person here who installed X51 996 oil pan into 997 car?
Hi, subj.
Suncoast says only one corner has to be cut to make it fit. They say they do it al the time but i cannot find not a single person on rennlist/renntech who could confirm this - if this part fits OK or not.
I do not think anybody here did this mod, but in case if somebody did - please don`t be shy to chime in. I wonder to know what specifically had to be cut on X51 996 oil pan baffles to make it fit 997 car.

My local mechanic says it may be a direct fit with no cuts needed according to his data. May be not. On some other forum somebody wrote a while ago that baffles will need multiple cuts. So it would help most to get a word from somebody who actually did it himself.

Did call and actually already ordered. Template they have is for Boxsters, i have it and according to it only one corner has to be slightly cut. They have no template for 997 engines.

I'm sure there must be some interesting reason why people put 996 parts on a 997 and I am eager to know what it is.

X51 996 oil pan prevents oil from splashing in oil sump and this reduces foaming, plus different baffle layout should keep more oil around oil intake. Theoretically.

Why for? To remedy knocking in hydraulic valve lifters when they suck in air instead of oil during hard cornering, generally.

Many parts on the 997 are the same as the 996.

One way or another - it knocks, very distinctive knock like a spoon on a frying pan, exactly at rate of engine at idle. It happens only and exclusively when I push her hard in dry conditions at auto-x. I thought it was due to old oil but after oil change i did 2 events during rain and it did not knock, but on next event when it was dry - it returned again. And it never knocks when i drive her on street, no matter what RPMs and how hot engine gets. It is definitely related to oil aeration.
There are 2 things that can do it - oil valve or hydraulic lifters. I was told by people at event it sounds like lifters.
so, $200 oil pan is a minor expense anyway. Will see if issue will go away with it or not.

Definitely minor compared to the consequences of oil starvation. Be sure and post when you see what results you get, will you?

On another post I wrote that the oil pan on the 997 S is as good as the one on the 997 S with X51 Powerkit as I have the full X51 kit on my 2006 Carrera S and the oil pan is not changed at all. I have the extensive parts list, down to every nut and bolt, gasket, washer, etc. and there is no different oil pan specified for the X51 Powerkit on the 997 Carrera S. That is because it is exactly the same pan and already as good as it can be, at least as Porsche is concerned.
The X51 pan sold on Suncoast is for a 996 Powerkit and, in that case, there may be a difference between the stock one and the X51 and I cannot comment on that as I don't have all the facts. I tried talking about this to the guys at Suncoast a long time ago and all my questions were answered inconclusively - no precise answer. I feel that there is no advantage in installing the 996 X51 oil pan on a 997 Carrera S - I cannot comment on the base Carrera's case because I don't know if the base Carrera and the S share the same one or not.

Suncoast sent me this template to follow. They have no clue if it has to be cut for 997 engine BTW. My mechanic says it will fit for sure but he does not remember if it was needed to cut baffles or not. Will see.

Next time try a few runs with a data logger and see what your real numbers are.
