What's up with these Corvette ads?

well, he did not complain about a Vette, he commented on the fact that he believes that GM is wasting money trying to convince Porsche owners to switch to Corvettes - judging by the comments in this thread pretty much rightly so.
It must have hit your Corvette-Nerve, especially as you are now ditching his Viper (a car that was awfully cool in 1994 - the vintage he had (and by the way, some people like going fast straight - drag racing is pretty popular and the Viper is pretty awsome at that).
Besides - as recent as 05 the Corvette was not able to follow the Viper on the Nurburgring:
8:13 --- 150.43 km/h - Dodge Viper SRT-10, 506 hp (sport auto, 10/04)
8:15 --- 149.82 km/h - Corvette C6, 404 PS/1491 kg (sport auto 08/05)
The other nerve that might have been hurt is your 'manly' nerve, judging by your comment about the blond woman (pretty funny, actually). Not sure how you define 'true sports car' or 'performance' car - but if you are one of these guys that gets excited that the same driver might get a second more out of a coupe than out of a Convertible (which is pretty unrelevant as long as you are competing with Amateur drivers as the skill of the driver makes all the difference), then we would be in for a very long discussion that is rather pointless.
Enjoy your 996Coupe - its a great car (despite being slower than the Vette)

Why so sensitive? I knew I could rile you up. You might want to read this recent study and learn to relax.

I have test driven a z06 a few times. It feels big compared to the 911 and is a lot harder to drive fast. Each time I've driven one I wanted to like it and went with the consideration of buying, not just trying it out, and each time I came away deciding not to do it. I don't always understand what carmag writers are talking about - for example I don't think the interior is all that bad in the vette nor do I think my non full leather interior is all that great - but I do understand what they mean when they write that you feel disconnected from the corvette. I sure did. The knowledge that you can go really fast isn't worth much if you can't do it and control it. When I was test driving it, the words "runaway truck" came to mind - both good and bad. Stupid fast in a straight line, but I felt like I was in a machine that had gotten away from me.

Your experience is the result of the lack of driving skills and not the ability of the Z06. The Porsche is a much easy car to drive fast for the average driver. With a skilled driver, there are not too many Porsche's that will beat the newest Z06 around the track.

Not many similarities between 911 and corvette. I respect what the vette stands for, but frankly the average vette lover is a very easily stereotyped breed (trying to be polite).
What I think is telling is that fact that you can take a brand new vette, revise the ECU to improve throttle response, retune the suspension to take out some slop and even revise the whole interior, and if you have to charge another $25k to offer that product, nobody will buy it. Vette people don't care about these things. As long as the car looks hot, sounds mean, scares the pants off you when you bury the loud pedal and costs no more than twice what they did or would pay for their family car, you're in there.
My old man has had the current vette former ZR-1 included since 1978. He can't understand why I got a C2 when I could have gotten a Z06 for less money. Different strokes....

PS ....as far as the Viper being a poor handling car...maybe early generations w/o ABS and no hard top...but the later Gen's III and especially the Gen IV and ACR are a different beast....trust me!!

I was referring to the 94 Viper that the poster had. No doubt, the worse of the years.

But Vettes always rule the roost when the front wheels are pointed straight. Braking and cornering are a different matter. Just ask Jan Magnussen of 2009 Laguna Seca ALMS fame!!

I have to respectfully disagree. A rear engined sports car behaves unlike any other layout. IMHO, any 911 is a very, very hard car to drive extremely well and to its limit (not to be confused with the fact that they are very easy to putt around in b/c they're well made German cars). I think its one of the 911's best qualities that it is a challenge to master. I would agree that any modern corvette requires some skill at the track if for no other reason than they have engines that are strong enough to taxi a jumbo jet down a runway. But as far as holding clean race lines and maximizing traction, I don't think a Z06 (which I've driven) or probably even a new ZR-1 (haven't driven yet) require any special skill beyond bravery.

Unfortunately, much of todays racing is more about making the car handle better rather than making the driving skills better. All the controls and AWD allow an otherwise "OK" driver to think that they have great skills. Remove all the sissy controls and he wouldn't make it around the track too many times.

I didn't check the forum for a few days and.. all these posts out of nowhere.
Hey, all i did is make a remark that (in my opinion) GM is wasting time comparing Pcars to Vettes. Never did I say they were bad or good cars..
As far as my Viper goes.. It was a very fun car to own. I have NEVER EVER got so much attention driving a car! And I have owned many in the last 20 years.Including Vettes.lol
First gen Viper is very cool looking car with a timeless design.. At the same time I also owned a 993 C4S. Its was like beauty and the beast.
Back with 997, beauty that is.
BTW, the comment about 20 some year blondes in a cab... Yep they are in my cab all summer long!! haha

The full leather interior in the Vette is better than a base 911 interior but worse than a full leather 911 interior. As far as track cars go a good set of racing seats, R compounds and coil overs make the Z06 with a good driver very hard to beat around a road course.
