New take on C2 vs C2S thread - reliability
All,
I'm relatively new to the forum, and find this to be an excellent resource! I'm looking to buy a C2 or C2S in the spring - probably 2006 or 2007.
I spend WAY too much time searching around and reading everything I can about impressions people have! But I'd like to know if anyone has any stats about reliability for the base C2 (3.6) vs the C2S (3.8). Most of the IMS issues I read about seem to involve the 3.8, and I haven't come across many (if any) complaints about similar catastrophic issues with the 3.6.
Thoughts?

Buy one that has been driven, as the garage queens tend to be more problematic. I have driven my car hard, almost 30 track days in the last 18-20 months, and I haven't had a warranty claim yet. I think that I need to go harder.

According to the sales figures I have seen the S outsells the base by about 30%. By the way I don't believe the RMS and IMS issues are related to S/non-S as much as they are to model year. It seems that the 2005 model year cars are most effected by these issues regardless of trim level. This is not to say that the 2006 and later cars won't start showing signs of trouble as they age.

Ultimately, I'll most likely end up with a CPO C2S, but I was wondering if the base C2 was a bit more reliable with the 3.6. It's certainly a cheaper car to maintain in terms of tire costs, but the main thing pushing me towards the S is the better brake system with easy to change pads.
Decisions, decisions!

Although the sale of the S is only about 30% higher, the population of S owners on the forum is a lot higher on the forums.
As for the number of IMS problems, the number is very low versus the number of owners on this forum. I have only seen a few people with a problem, a lot of people talk about it, but not many experience it. I think that it is talked about a fair amount, as nothing else really seems to be a problem with these cars, they are very well built cars.

My '07 just had the IMS replaced under warranty. 24k miles. Built 8/06 delivered 9/06, one of the first '07's. $1500 warranty job. Also had the clutch slave cylinder replaced. One day the clutch pedal just starting making a funny noise as I was pushing it down. Kept doing it. Then it stopped. Turns out that a little plastic part broke off according to the dealer. About a $500 warranty job. Car seems really solid to me and I drive it daily. However, that's quite a bit of cost over 6 months. The IMS wasn't really leakingi but it was seaping a bit. Lucky that the dealer took care of it for me. I would not call that a typical repair event for these cars. The clutch cylinder, a bit surprising and I've not heard of anyone else with that problem.
