Do you tell other 997 owners about 6speed?
Today I was at a gas station filling up the Turbo . Behind me pulls in a 997S and the guy complimented my car as i did his too. We talked a bit and I shared a little about what what upgrades were done with my car and told him about 6speed . I explained that this forum is a wonderful resource for any Porsche owner who wants to gain insight about customizing his car .
I notice when i tell people I get different responses . Some are simply too busy , others actually show up , one or two were members but just don't post much .
BUT there are also those who seem to lack interest . Oddly enough the ones who lack the most interest are the guys who drive the car every day . It's as if the car is just a vehicle and either the novelty wore off or the owner never really wanted to make his car unique . I guess i can understand it a little bit. For instance I am not really enthusiastic about home improvements so even though I have a home if I met someone who was thrilled with remodeled kitchens I would not care . But I would probably say something instead of just politely nod --like i just did here.
Do you tell others ? What reactions do you get?
Anyone here find 6speed because someone else with a 997 told you?

A lot of people dont "get" what a forum is about, its a social network... we learn so much about our cars, and get to hear from hundreds of people who all had different experiences, it gives us a great upper hand. Many guys just want a porsche to drive it and don't get into the passion of what the car really is... some people don't care... I love my cars I take passion, there my 2nd girl friends... Take care of them, make them better, learn more about them, get comfortable with them... I met a couple people through forums... people that helped me and my friends out greatly... its like a huge porsche family

I find it a good conversation starter when I see another Porsche owner especially if I'm not in mine at the time. So far I've yet to randomly meet someone from the forum but the responses I've gotten when I tell them about it is positive.

I always tell people that come into the shop... I assume they don't know (quite often they don't). I think it's such a neat place for us Porsche-nuts to share our sickness... There's so much great info that this community shares and you get to meet some insane people. I think of it as "online dating" but for Porsche buffs.

I've been a member at pelican parts for about 8 or 9 years and with my older 911s I've run into a ton of people who I've refered or spoken to about the site. Since I bought the 997 I haven't been there much but I'll deffinetly big up this site going forward.
Only challenge with the newer cars is that they are often owned by the guys who with money who just wanted a nice sports car whereas 911 owners are typically enthousiasts.
I'm curious to see which canadians in the Ottawa area are members here.

pretty good thread started here Larry. I for one am a big fan of the website, a friend of mine who happened to be the salesman at the dealership I bought my first porsche at turned me on. Its been a really good way to share the joy of owning an amazing car and also for sharing with like minded people the enthusiasm for all these crazy cars. The only downside is the hole burning in my wallet also because of this site, lol

Alot of owners are not enthusiasts. They bought the car as a status symbol, to impress women or both, but they're not real "car guys".
Os some may see "talking with people on the internet as stupid" as I have been told before. I've been called a geek for talking about forums.

I stumbled upon this forum when I began to research porsches. I had a client buy a 06 Cab for $43k in June 09' and I was like damn.... that's doable. So the obsession began. Now, having put my time in, i'm not so sure he got a great car. He got a cheap car but that's not what I was after. But, My search sparked interest in another friend of mine. I turned him onto the site and he's lurking around here obsessing as we speak I'm sure. He's about to pull the trigger on a 997S.
I did meet some guy at an open house in the neighborhood. When I pulled up to the house he ran out. Apparently he'd just bought a 997 the week before and we started talking. He asked about my clear side markers and then I pointed him in the direction of this site for great info. He looked at me like I was an alien life form. Granted, he was a bit older but not old enough to never hear of the internet. I started asking him details about his car. The things he didn't know about his on car shocked me.

I do to people I know but social networking on public forums requires pretty specific way of mind. Not all the people even like it, many got burned ones and do not expose themselves anymore. I am in IT so for me, say, it`s a second nature to lurk on multiple forums at once. Some people are just different.

I would definitely tell people if I the situation arises. Just for the record I have no desires to customize my car. I'm here primarily to learn information from more experienced owners/enthusiasts and to share any information that I can help others with. I'm new to Porsche although I've owned other sports cars (mostly Mazdas) since I was able to drive.

I was at a car wash in my Volvo DD and a fellow pull up behind me in a new Cayman, it had the temp sticker on it. We were waiting for the bay to open so I got out and started talking to him. I asked why he would bring his new Porsche to a "Touch" car wash and he said "How else would it get washed?" I said, washing it is part of the enjoyment of owning a Porsche. You can get intimate with it.
I told him about 6 speed, PCA, and the local Porsche Club, which offered DE and track time at Brainerd Race Way.
He had no idea there was so much more available to him than just driving a Porsche.
He had never had a sports car and really liked the looks of the Cayman, so he bought one.
He sounded eager to get involved and decieded to go home and wash the car him self.
