Carrera curse
Is there anyone out there addicted to carreras and cannot force themselves to even think about buying something different?
Anyone out there who managed to pull out from this endless black hole called Carrera that we love so much?
Am I defining Porsche or is Porsche defining me?

LOL - I have bought other cars . But they are simply "other cars" whreas my Porsche is viewed with favoritism .
I have also taken brief hiatus from Porsches like when my xenon lights were stolen . The grief and worry was just too much that I needed some time with a more simple car.
The formula is very simple though - no money =no more Porsche .
Or if I get old where I can't drive , or ill -- then I would find joy in other things and move forward retaining the great memories that these cars have provided in my life.

Haha! Hilarious - I don't even have my 1st Porsche, and I'm obsessed. The past few nights, I've gone to bed after my routine of:
1. help put the baby to bed
2. check work e-mails one last time
3. read through the new posts on this forum
4. search auto-trader and cars.com
5. see if there are new posts on this forum
As a result, I've had crazy Porsche dreams for the past three nights! After one stressful day at work, I had a dream that I bought a car that I thought was perfect. Then I brought it home and realized it wasn't even a 997! It was much older, and when I went to wash it, there was a big puddle in the passenger side.
I'd say Porsche is defining (destroying) me at the moment

I wanted to get 911 car for last 15 years at least, but it was never a good moment. Even after we had enough money it still was always something else until my wife told me I should just get it get over with this as she got tired of my head turning after each Porsche we drove by.

When I was 13 and delivering papers I calculated that at my then current rate of pay I would never be able to afford a Porsche by the time I was 19. When I talked to my dad about this he smirked, put downtje book he was reading, and asked me to have a seat with him on the couch. He proceeded to explain to me the process by which one aquires what they desire.
In October of 01, three months before my 19th birthday, I bought my first guards red 911.
By this account, I've been obsessed since I was 13. Good luck with your rehabilitation.

I have had the Porsche curse for years although I finally purchased my first one only 6 months ago. My purchase also involved the combination of finances being good and the wearing down process of my wife, so that she eventually was begging for me to take the plunge. The problem is, now she can't understand why I am still perusing autotrader on a regualr basis.
I am finding the experience much like an experience with a memorable old girlfriend. When I drive the car I am acutely aware of its faults, its rattles, its rough ride, its less-than-BMW build quality. But when I am away from her, uh, it, boy do I miss it! For people who love to drive it's a passion thing.

My curse started back in 1988 and it took until 2010 to "cure" it. Back then I was getting ready to trade my 1985 Mazda RX-7 GS for a 1988 RX-7 Turbo. The sticker on the Turbo was 22.5K which was a good chunk of change for a 21 year old kid to drop on a car back then. My mother insisted that if I planned on spending this kind of money that I should seek out and test drive at least 2 competitors. The Toyota Supra and the Porsche 944 were the main competitors at the time. I dismissed the Supra as being too big and heavy. I really liked the 944 but its performance lagged behind the RX-7 Turbo. In order to match the RX-7 Turbo I would have had to move up to the 944 Turbo which was 10K more and well out of my budget. I bought the RX-7 Turbo and drove the hell out of it for 7 years and 120K miles but the Porsche "seed" was planted. It took 22 years for it to "sprout" but here I am.

For a while I thought the R8 might end the curse
finally an alternative to my 30 year Porsche obsession. The R8s in either form are exclusive, have great cache and are great DD, but their performance is not up to their price. Never thought I'd see the day when a Porsche is a better bargain than its competitor. A 2010 M3 with DCT is a really nice coupe and a bargain in price, but didn't end my Porsche lust.
You know what car is almost as much fun (only metric for comparison here is fun) to drive as my Porsche - Mini Cooper S for 1/4 the price! That'll be my "beater".

The P-bug has stung me so deep that it hurts to sit on my exercise bike. All the driving and forum time has completely jeopardized my exercise regimen and I am soon beginning to realize that unless I get back to my training regimen my body will no longer be within the confines of the adaptive sport seats.

If value is to be part of the equation the Miata is the way to go.

Since I was a kid I've always loved cars. From 13-16 I imagined many love affairs. Lotus Europa, Triumph TR6, Jensen Healey, Saab Sonnett, BMW 2002tii, Alfa 2000 coupe and spyder, Porsche 911 and 914, Fiat 850 spyder, Ferrari Dino, Plymouth Barracuda, Chevy Camaro, I loved them all, there were a lot of really interesting cars back in the late 60s and early 70s. I went through many cars (VW Scirocco and Jetta, a family loaner MB 280E, and two BMWs 318is/530i) before financially being able to arrive at Porsche. I think that now the great appeal of Porsche for me is the "everyday exotic" combination of practicality and performance, w/ a healthy dose of history and nostalgia thrown in. I'm not sure what's out there now that can trump Porsche for these qualities. BMW and MB have lost appeal for me with their obesity and techno orientation. Aston Martin? Nice but staid. Lamborghini? Hasn't rung my bell since the 400GT and Miura. I've seriously considered Ferrari ownership, but since the buy in cost is only a fraction of the true ownership cost I don't foresee a 458 Italia in my garage anytime soon despite the lust.
