305s on a C2 with 19" Carrera Classics

Just checking to see if anyone has ever installed 305s on their C2. I have the 19" Carrera Classics with 295/30/19 and would like to know the pros and cons of installing a bigger tire.

Also, please post pics if you have them. -Cheers.

What's the rim width of the carrera classics? You need to ensure they are wide enough to accept a 305 tire.

Assuming it is wide enough the pros of a 305 is increased traction to the rear wheels at the expense of:

-Increased rotational inertia (more noticeable than you would think)
-Increased weight (by how much depends on tire brand/specs)
-Slight increase in rear ride height (although we're talking tens of MM's here)

the Carrera Classics (and any other Carrera wheels for that matter) are 11" wide in the rear. They're the same widths on the widebodies, which have 305's in the rear, so they will definitely fit. The question is whether you want the extra width or not.

Most noticeable difference will be the increase in grip at the rear, which will increase the understeer of the car. The 305's will also be very slightly taller, so they will hurt acceleration ever so slightly (far from noticeable, but still there).

Also agree with all mentioned in this post -->

Thanks for the great information.

I just compared the tire specs and found out that the 305s will have a .12" greater radius/sidewall height, .24" more in diameter and .39" greater section width.

Should I be concerned with tire bulge?

I have a set of wheels with 295's and a set with 305's, you won't notice a difference. All the other concerns are like splitting hairs. It really doesn't matter IMO.

NorthVan, is there a noticeable visual difference between the 295s and 305s? I definitely like the wider look.

Arguably there is, the 305 seems to fill the wheel well out a bit more, but it could just be the black wheels that they are mounted on (Sport Design) vs the Silver Carrera Classics that the 295's are mounted on. The reality is that you posted the size differences it isn't that much of a difference on the overall size.

305's will fit no issues. No pro's or cons on the street.

I just bought my car as a CPO from a Porsche dealer here in my area. As part of doing the CPO, the dealer put brand new Bridgestone 305s on the back.

Tire type will make more of a difference than the 295/305 difference. Search my threads and you will find my picture comparing a 295 Bridgestone A/S with a 305 050A. The difference in tread width is over an inch. The factory widebody wheels are also 11" wide running the 305; there is no difference in wheel width running the 2 different sizes. I run the turbo rims in the summer with 235/305's. I'd probably go to a 295 in the rear, just to impact the understeer more. The 305's will look fatter though!

I love the scientific discussions on the difference earlier in the thread:
Car is taller, but not measuarable
Car is heavier, but not really

I am with Ryem - the main difference is the choice of brands, Michelin, Pirelli, Bridgestone, Nitto etc; they all have different characters, advantages and prices.

I switched from 295s to 305s and from Michelin to Pirelli PZero Rossos, my take is:
- tires are slightly wider and fill out their 'cavity' better
- tire sidewall height appears to be a touch more, they don't seem to be as low (though it is a tiny difference)
- an important feature that I did not consider but like is that the tire overhands the wheel edge by like half a centimeter, thus protects the wheel a bit more when you you hit a curb
Verdict: they drive equally as beautiful and look a bit better

Price: for four tires the 305s set was about $100 more than the 295s, paid all in with tax and install just under $2000
