First, I currently have both cars: a 997.2 C2S and a e36 M3. Upon first blush, the e36 appears to be a cheap car, but like many older German cars, the purchase price is only a down payment. Since 97, my car has been on the track every year of its life and has had extensive preventative maintenance. To take a e36 car and make it “trackable” is a significant commitment (race water pump, re-enforced chassis points, suspension, multiple braces, slicks, etc.). Your sub $10k car could easily be over $20k and growing. I have slightly less than $100k in mine over its life of 13 years (both upgrades and preventative maintenance).

With that said, it’s fast, very fast. And it is simply a pleasure to drive and a very pure experience. Completely neutral and like holding a scalpel for the track. As I like to joke, any idiot can drive it fast. Great car to learn in because it’s so forgiving.

However, it does lack something special that every 911 I’ve ever driven has…
