Smile RMS leak 06 997s, Huntington Porsche

does a neat and fast repair. Earlier this week, 3 wks prior to the expiration of my warranty (phew!) the rms was found to be "wet" during a quick check of the car. P of Huntington Long Island (NY) did the repair neatly and quickly w no drama. The new service management is an improvement in my experience. Thanks John et al for the assistance. For those of you keeping score my 06S currently has 22K miles and I was surprised as hell to find myself w this problem. No oil on the floor, just an oily seepage on the engine. Before warranties expire it makes good sense to have a checkup

You were pretty lucky. But, now that the warranty is expiring, are you considering getting an extended warranty? Being "naked" vs. spending money in a 3rd party warranty is not an easy decision.

After much agonizing I am going w/o. Rolling the dice here but the warranties available thru the dealer will equal about a thou a year on repairs costwise. Ruling out engine failure I should be alright. Or not. You will rest easier w a warranty for sure. That alone might be worth the price of admission. I didn't ask whether warranty would cover a leaking seal. Need a crystal ball here but the folks offering the warranties assume they will make money on the deal or they would get a job

Clutch, brakes etc not covered under any warranties I've ever heard of. Wouldn't help you my friend. It's all the electronic stuff I have nightmares about.

Me too. I am concerned about how the electronics on our 997s are going to hold up in the long run, as I intend to keep the car for perhaps 10 or more years. I am not even going to talk about a catastrophic engine failure, as I hope my '06 is not prone to the dreaded IMS failure.

So far pasm has been pretty good and you can always go to conventional aftermarket shocks if you have to. 06 models have "improved" ims setup so theres hope for us. I think what makes it scary is that it is next to impossible to work on the cars with all the electronics. In addition to a good dealer you need to find an indie shop you can depend on.

Actually Porsche has come to bat for an ims failure in some cases and picked up part of the tab as a "good will" gesture. It's not as if they don't know about the problem. They have not gone as far as BMW did w the E46 m3 and recall all cars for a main bearing replacement however. Oh well.....
