I disagree. When you've done it enough, you can do it without thinking about it. It has nothing to do with racing or how fast you're going, it's a standard way to reduce wear on your syncro's.

That said, adias is correct, that if you're not used to it, don't practice in heavy traffic where it could be a distraction. But, once it is second nature, it's simply like any other action you'd use to drive a car.

Just be sure to leave the clutch in (and stay in the higher gear) while you'e braking. That is, let the engine help slow the car along with the brakes. Once you're at or near the speed you want, then downshift to be in the correct gear. Using the clutch to slow your car is a very expensive way to slow the car (it's no more effective than the brakes and costs a lot to replace).

Its the same with bikes, blipping the throttle on downshifts. I've raced at Barber on a bike and am heading down in May for the Perf. school and the Turbo school, but all I can say is there are so many fewer gear changes on the cars, its amazing. That's almost like driving an automatic .... .

heel and toe

I have had many P car on the track and have found that I have had to built up the gas pedal with all the cars. I do it by using a 3/4 in thick board and tie wrap it to the pedal.
I now have a E throttle and did the same thing except that one has to watch where you run the tie wraps as there are plastic bracing on the back of the pedal. I drilled a hole abou half way up the pedal and ran one tie wrap thru it and the other wrap near the top.
