Took A Hit Today

Depreciation hit that is

I think the consensus is that when a car breaks through the 10k mark, there is a depreciation hit. Well I did it today on a drive. I guess there's no looking back now but to keep this one forever and drive the heck out of it

I felt the same way at 10k on my Turbo . I'm at 10,500 and I am still clinging to the miles. Yep ., there is that moment in the 9K + range where facing the commitment to the car had me evaluate it a bit. It was easy with the Turbo . I don't know what i will do with the PDK car. I just crossed 4K today .. we'll see. There's still time.

Cars like the 997 are meant to be driven, they aren't unique enough to hold it's value if they aren't driven.

i agree 100%, cars do NOT hold value. They are a depreciating asset. I would look at it another way rather than how much the car is worth when you sell it. Look at it in a sense of cost per mile driven. Makes more sense, by not driving the car and just storing it, you are still losing value but you are not getting any utility and use if it just sits.

Thanks for all the responses. Yup, never intended the car to be a garage queen. I don't really care what I get for the car if I ever trade it in. Hope to have a pic of passing 20k in a bit over 18 months

I've had several that were daily drivers and now two that are not exactly garage queens but get a little less action . The big plus of having a low mile car is that every time I drive it I feel like I am getting into a new car. Now it's true that it can still depreciate , it can still need service and it can even get a dent --but the effort of keeping it like new does have its appeal when it's years after buying the car that it still is a new car (only dated by time but not wear and tear).

Kudos on hitting 10k. The miles just fly by...and winter's no reason to park it! Mine survived Boston's winter and relished every minute of it (twice weekly washes to keep our notorious salt at bay did help). ...and that Ferrari thing cracks me up. I'm relatively new to the sociology regarding the people that own different types of cars, and the garage queen mentality is still baffling.

I sold my first 997 C2S cab at 25,000 miles, and my Targa had 19,000 miles when i recently sold it, and they both still felt like new cars every time I got into them. Don't pamper them. Enjoy them like they were meant to be enjoyed - ON THE ROAD.

19K and 25K miles are somewhat new cars. I just would prefer to take 6 years to reach 25K instead of 2 years. It stretches the experience and adds a novely to the car every time i drive it plus it reduces the exposure risk to the harsh elements of daily driving and parking in a city.

Let me ask a question and preface it by saying that if my car was stock or modestly modified I probably would drive it more . I don't like to see miles on any car but I will drive my Honda and M3 the most. They are BOTH stock. Next up would be the PDK car .

The Turbo is different . The amount of time and money placed into creating the car leaves an impression where I want to savor every mile . I just can't imagine driving an EVT700 every day because its that tough of an act to follow . Any car I would buy would take over a year just to bring it to this level so the idea of stretching the time with this car means driving it less.

Do you feel that if you created a car that took so much extra time you would still drive it often? To the shopping mall? To the supermarket? In traffic?

I won't. It just makes no sense . Even in terms of saving money.. I would save all of it and don't buy the car and bring it to that level to waste the miles .
