Werks 1 Composite Intake 997.2 DFI

Any one pick one of these up?

(the structure is full carbon fiber and it looks similar to porsche's intake, can't find a picture of it anywhere but I saw it at RSS.)

Has anyone purchased one yet, I know its brand spanking new? Any reviews? Its a pretty penny (retail $3,500) for the pony gains but looks stellar and am curious about its sound.I am getting tired of the high pitched raspy-ness I hear from my fabspeed intake.

Curious if you are happy with the performance gains from the FabSpeed intake. Other then tiring of the sound what are your impressions. I was thinking about doing this mod.

Rob,

From the get go, I definitely felt more significant power gains. Surprisingly I felt more of an improvement than I that originally thought. After installing CG mufflers and SW bypass, the incremental HP (butt dyno tested of course) gains between adding those pieces to how fast the car felt after the Fabspeed intake was significant! And the intake was the cheapest part? I wanted to hear more of a vacuum noise instead when gently pressing the accelerator this makes it sound very raspy and over the top loud in my opinion, perhaps because the air filters aren't enclosed in anything or perhaps its because I have a cab.

This may have been as a result of my completion of the entire set up though, versus just the addition of the intake.

How much is this intake again? Somebody PM me! Looks beautiful...much better than the open Fabspeed one IMHO.

You can't be serious... A $3k intake and you still have to sacrifice lower end power? No thanks

tri, not much sacrifice there in the lower rpm band (coupld of hp)...could be just the difference between the 2 dyno runs. Nothing you would ever notice or feel either. The bigger gain on the dyno graph is in the higher rpms. Plus at speed with real life air flow going into the air box this higher rpm gain could even be better.

Thanks for the insight, mdrums. If such minimal difference cannot be "feeled" (either less or more) then at the end of the day, this piece is nothing but a cosmetic piece =(

For that type of money, I can go Fabspeed intake, center exhaust delete, and a flash to experience much higher gains... and still have money left over for other toys. Just my $.02

Tri,

Sure you can do that but expect the following (speaking from experience ):

1. A check engine light to go off (even if you have an S it'll still go off and "it'll go away"). I have it on my car and it didn't come on initially, came on after 100 miles, another 100 miles went away and now is constantly on. I'm really not sure why FAB would allow the product to be sold and knowingly admit to a CEL going off and not trying to address the issue. It's so annoying how would a customer really know when something does go wrong with the engine. When my car tells me its hurting "visit workshop check engine" I too am hurting.

2. An acute, sharp almost painful ricey exhaust note at WOT and higher RPMs almost on the verge of being unbearable in a bad way not in the push me longer and hold me down longer.

3. Dirty filters won't be cleaned or touched or replaced assuming your dealers not mod friendly. (I'm imagining FAB's gets dirtier quicker because of the design of the intake)

4. Depending on how you install it the top of the piping on the intake to barely grazes into the bottom of the lid. *a very disturbing occurrence especially after you just powder coated it satin black. Could of been my fault or due to extra thickness of the powder.

5. Having to double back expenses and earn ten cents on the dollar for reselling brand new goods.

Also a quick aside, some respected board members have mentioned that FAB's intake allows excessive amounts of warm air into the engine rather than cold air. Can someone else help me understand?

This seems like a nonsensical statement because the stock air box is enclosed and wouldn't air channeled through a black plastic box generally be significantly warmer than the open air design of FAB? FAB's intakes are fully exposed to the engine bay with carbon fiber heat shields surrounding it and makes the engine bay look so much easily accessible. Shouldn't that make it cooler?

Perhaps someone with better knowledge can chime in about what why FAB's design causes more warm air into our engines and why its bad for performance or general engine maintenance?

The air being channeled in through the black plastic box is NOT warmer, because only cold air being rushed in from outside of the car, through the decklid and directly into the stock airbox is entering the intake whereas the FAB intake is fully exposed to the HOT engine bay. The heat shield does not block out all the hot air from the engine, and does not do nearly as well a job as the stock airbox or even the Werks 1 intake in isolating the specific air that enters the intake. Werks 1 and stock airbox only let cold outside air enter, and completely isolates the intake from the hot ambient air accumulating in the engine bay. All cold air intakes operate on the principle of increasing the amount of oxygen available for combustion with fuel. Because cooler air has a higher density (greater mass per unit volume), cold air intakes generally work by introducing cooler air from outside the hot engine bay. By principle and design, the stock airbox is a cold air intake, and an efficient one at that.

Thanks for the info 10-C4-10! I'm glad I posted my intentions.

I think the best bet is to just get some BMC filters and call it a day.

On the subject of BMC filters, has anyone got them for their 997.2? The BMC website lists filters for the facelifted carrera 09+ as part number 550/08. I emailed BMC and Fabspeed to ask if I need to order one or if two filters came together ($250 retail on the BMC website).

Neither responded?

I guess I'll order one and see what happens?
