Youyou--sorry if I repeated this reply, but I can't PM yet..

Greetings,
I enjoyed reading about your head unit upgrade. I'm awaiting my '06 C4S next week. I have them installing a tooki bluetooth to the PCM for $1070. Do you suggest I wait on that and get the Pioneer unit?

May I ask how much the unit/install cost and where you had it done? Also, I see that it says "Porsche" on the plastic surrounding the display. Is that stock?

thanks again--

df

Hi,
Congrats on the upcoming car.
1070$ For just the bluetooth is just absolutely insane!
100% Without a doubt i think you should the same thing i did.
The Pioneer Head unit cost me 700$ online. It was brand new. I got a good deal on it. But they usually run between 800$ and 900$.
The plastic surrounding cost me 250$ and it comes with the Porsche sticker.
Install took about 4 hours and cost me 200$.
All in all i spent 1150$.
It's a no brainer.

I was thinking about painting my bezel and the rest of the center column satin black like the 997.2's. What do you think?

You know i somewhat agree with what your dealer told you but i think Porsche in particular lags way behind...
My previous car 2010 S5 had an amazing Nav/iPod/Bluetooth system.

I think painting the bezel in black would be an amazing idea! I thought about that as well... Please let me know if anything materializes i'd be very interested.

If you change the head unit, you will be committed to changing everything. As far as I know, Porsche uses fiber optic cables with the Bose system. I had to go with Monster cables, new Alpine power source/amp and Focal speakers. I removed the 6 cd changer and placed the amp in its place.

If you are just looking for hands free phone operation...get a jawbone headset ($100). It has noise cancellation technology and even works when I am driving with the top down. However, if you are looking for I-pod, xm sat, bluetooth, hands free phone, and navigation then take a look at the Kenwood or pioneer.

Whoever sold you this system lied to you 110% and took much more of your money than needed! You do not need to add an amp nor change out the speakers. This is not to say that your system doesn't sound better than ours, but as far as being committed to change everything, that's a bunch of bullsh$t.

The original poster did not have to do this and I did the exact same system as he did and did not have to add an amp or change speakers.

We went from the amp in the head unit, bypassed the Bose amp and went directly to the Bose speakers. Nothing more is needed to be done...

You did NOT need Monster cable, a Alpine amp or new Focal speakers.

To be clear, all that's need for the install is the headunit, harnesses and bezel?

Bezel and harness from Loi at Euromotorspeed and of course the knowledge to do the install and wiring.....

Thats all you need. Oh wait, you will need an RCA cable to go from the head unit to the Bose sub amp. That way you will have much more control over the bass amp-sound.

Thanks Steve. Now one silly question: how/where does your iPod hook up to the head unit?

If you are talking about a Pioneer head unit, you need to buy the iPod cable ($45.00, I believe). This connects to the back of your head unit and then I had them run it to the glove box. You never need to get to the ipod as all the controls are on the head unit. i bought a 120 gig iPod, sooo much music on there, I will never be able to listen to all of it.

I did this for 2 reasons...So that it is out of site from thieves and the shop didn't have to take apart more of my car. The less that's taken apart, the better off you will be in terms of no rattles, etc.

I also had them mount the microphone next to the head unit. Again, so they didn't have to take apart any more of the car than needed.

Yup, that's what I needed to know. Where did you get the cable from?
